I do have a serious point.The MSM tries to cover themselves up by talking Free Press and Free Media without differentiating between Journalists and MEDIA. The USA MSM prints the Company Line and obfuscates obvous truths. All are important. The MSM isn't perfect, but it doesn't always cave to financial pressure. In fact, that's probably more the exception than the rule.

Perhaps you miss the point. There is Independent MSM (very small percentage) and then there is Big Corporate MSM. Big Corporate is for sale to the highest bidder or we are not a capitalist/corporatist Nation.

Only up to a point. Media companies rely on advertisers, but they won't fabricate or distort stories just to please those advertisers. (Tabloids like the Enquirer do, but I wouldn't count them in the MSM.)

The stories about Saddam having WMD weren't printed for the purpose of selling more papers or drumming up higher ratings.

Editors and reporters get duped, too. Far less often than the average Trump worshiper, but they're still not perfect.

Very few free press are around. The local newspapers are just turning out more and more trash each and every year. That is not a free press, that is producing garbage for human garbage to read.

I think the press has a lot more to worry about, like gaining back the trust of the American People. What good is a free press if most Americans don't believe what they print, report or say? Here's a Gallup article from the end of the Obama administration, 2016.

"WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans' trust and confidence in the mass media "to report the news fully, accurately and fairly" has dropped to its lowest level in Gallup polling history, with 32% saying they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media. This is down eight percentage points from last year."

I don't think we get what Gallup referred to as the news reported fully, fairly and accurately from any of the corporate owned news outlets. That includes TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, whatever. Corporations goal is to make money. If making money means slanting the news, reporting it in a bias manner catered to suit their readers, viewers, etc political point of view, their ideology such as is done at Fox, CNN and MSNBC, so be it. They need to retain their subscribers, customers for lack of a better word and try to add more. The best way to retain their audience is to give them the news in the way they want it from their political point of view, philosophy, ideology etc. The more readers, viewership, the more they can charge for commercials and advertisements.

Over the years, the press has lost the trust and believability of most Americans to report the news fairly, fully and accurately. This also includes choosing what stories or news events get reported on and which is ignored. The press has taken sides in our political battles. They don't just report on them anymore. They slant our political battles to suit their viewing audience or readers, give them what they want in the way they want it.

I don't have a problem for example of CNN and MSNBC taking the liberal and Democratic Party side of things or FoxNews taking the conservative/Republican side. I recognize it and take what is reported by them with that in mind. If Gallup is correct, 32% is a very low number of Americans who now trust the media, the press. Apparently most also recognize the fact the news their getting isn't exactly fair, accurate or in full, not kosher but politically biased and slanted.

I don't think Trump's rants against fake news helps or hurts. I think the press has caused their own untrustfulness of most Americans. Which was recognized by most Americans before Trump arrived on the scene. The press, media, they need to begin working on regaining the trust they once had. All this biased and slanted reporting isn't going to regain anything, but perhaps keep the money rolling in from those who want news filtered, bent, slanted and presented in the political ideology manner they tuned into see.

When a MSM prints an agenda driven narrative, it is the exact opposite of a Free Press. Again, Iraq and WMD. The MSM wasn't duped. It intentionally did not investigate the story.

The MSM is in the back pocket or joined at the hip with the War Machine, MIC, and Intelligence Agencies. Good links. Maybe all "narratives" need a header describing that they are a narrative. The NeoCon agenda narrative is promoted in USA MSM as if it is fact and truth. Nowhere is it stated that its' underlying aim is World Domination by Economic Hegemony, enemies fantasized from whole cloth, and a war agenda to save Nations from evil by bringing chaos, poverty, destruction and death to these same Nations.
