A series of fire tornadoes — genuine twisters made of smoke and flame — struck Lassen County, Calif., on Saturday, churning around as the Loyalton Fire rapidly expanded to more than 20,000 acres. Extreme fire behavior and pinpoint lightning strikes accompanied the massive blaze, which was 5 percent contained Sunday morning after burning for two days.

The powerful fire and potent rotation inside the wildfire even prompted the National Weather Service in Reno, Nev., to issue what is believed to be the first weather alert of its kind: a “fire tornado warning.

1st time in CA, I am sure as the climate changes increase we will see more of these fire tornadoes

Yep, this is the fire right near where we live at. We had a precautionary evacuation notice last night but the winds changed so it was cancelled. Right now the fire is to the north of us. The concern we have now is if the strong winds change to the south.

The tornado thing isn't common but for a fast burning fire like this though, it literally creates its own weather pattern which is unpredictable thus in this case created a fire tornado. Pictures and videos of that are pretty wicked.

Stay safe. With climate change dry areas like CA and others will see more of these.

Time to rethink on what fires to attack and what to leave burning

I think that is why this fire is not very contained. It's fast burning so it looks like fire fighters are just trying to keep it from going south and preparing a perimeter to the far east of the fire. We have some hard working fire fighters and police working their asses off right now.
