A Four-Decade Secret: The Untold Story of Sabotaging Jimmy Carter’s Re-election

i00?0?

Biden said half the country is a threat to America. This is a little more serious than name calling.
As though you people don’t say worse about liberals every ****in day. If words bother you so much, stay off the internet.

Really? I have come to the opposite conclusion. Biden's odious and hateful speech demonizing Trump supporters, Hillary's deplorable talk, Obama's
bitter clingers reference, etc. It is actually the left that hates Americans and it is not a conclusion one is "forced" to arrive at; they say it proudly.
Should Biden have lied, instead?

Biden's speech walks a fine line in its attack on MAGA Republicans

Sep 2, 2022 President Biden delivers a prime-time speech Thursday night at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia. Alex Wong/Getty Images Democrats have picked up some momentum this election...

Two months later,

"...While midterm elections typically see the incumbent president's party lose a substantial number of seats,[8][9] Democrats dramatically outperformed the historical trend, and a widely anticipated red wave did not materialize.....The Democratic Party's strength in state-level and senatorial elections was historic,[18][19][20] as well as unexpected.'

I was answering a question about who hates Americans more. You say that words don't matter? You know you don't believe that. Again, pay attention to what is going on in the thread.

I didn't know that this wasn't already common knowledge.

The stuff Republicans have done right out in the open isn't much better in that day.

Dick Cheney voted against an anti-apartheid bill. We made that guy vice president 20 years later.

Taking actions that leave Americans imprisoned for a longer period simply to win an election shows that one hates Americans

Now, one of the people who was part of the conspiracy, comes forward.

Probably because he's terminally ill and figures he will never see the inside of a courtroom, or because any statute of limitations that might apply is long since expired.
Typical gutless Republican.

I didn't know that this wasn't already common knowledge.

Most of it was, and it simply boils down to the notion that maybe we didn't know all the nuts and bolts or major players.
But we have KNOWN for four decades that Reagan illegally influenced foreign policy of the United States by conspiring with a known hostile actor.

What they DID end up gaining, some of it is still sitting in their armories right now.

Iran-Contra is a different kettle of fish from the October Surprise, though. I wouldn't put an effort to get the Iranians to do what they were going to do anyway in the same category. Maybe if all the facts were known at the time, it should have been a warning of what was to come, but that's about it.

So I gather Reagan was in league with the Ayatollahs in defeating the Evangelical Christian Jimmy Carter. Now I've heard it all.
Well, the United States has definitely taken an antichristian turn since then.

And I ain’t talking about the “left”

A Four-Decade Secret: The Untold Story of Sabotaging Jimmy Carter’s Re-election

It was 1980 and Jimmy Carter was in the White House, bedeviled by a hostage crisis in Iran that had paralyzed his presidency and hampered his effort to win a second term. Mr. Carter’s best chance for victory was to free the 52 Americans held captive before Election Day. That was something that Mr. Barnes said his mentor was determined to prevent.
...
What happened next Mr. Barnes has largely kept secret for nearly 43 years. Mr. Connally, he said, took him to one Middle Eastern capital after another that summer, meeting with a host of regional leaders to deliver a blunt message to be passed to Iran: Don’t release the hostages before the election. Mr. Reagan will win and give you a better deal.

===========
It was something many suspected, Reagan conspired to sabotage efforts to release the Americans held hostage by Iran, and thus keep them captives longer, so as to hurt Carter's re-election chances. Now, one of the people who was part of the conspiracy, comes forward.
A Reagan story is in breaking news? If only........

You know that sounds very similar to how candidate Tricky Dick (Richard Nixon) sabotaged LBJ's efforts to stage productive peace talks by promising the South Vietnam government a better deal if he takes power so that a frustrated American electorate would turn to the Republicans and him as the only hope to end the war. The subversive effort succeeded with the result being several more years of war and tens of thousands of American deaths that may not have otherwise occurred. And all for personal political reasons.

Not much of a secret. I've seen this issue mentioned several times. Read "Guests of the Ayatollah".

I was thinking of that as well... but isn't that also a case of convincing them to do something they were going to do anyway? South Vietnam knew that Nixon was probably going to give them a better deal than Humphrey, so it's not like they were going to do anything to help out Humphrey's campaign anyway.

That being said, Nixon sold them down the river anyway.... so there's the same warning light of what was to come.

They're overselling the importance of the hostage crisis to that election though. Remember the economy was sagging as well (or at least perceived to be) and the encumbent has to wear it when that happens.

Nixon was figuring on running against LBJ. Not Humphrey. If LBJ had succeeded in negotiating a peace deal that ended the war there is no doubt he would have run for election and would have been far and away the favorite to be the Democratic nominee. Humphrey only came into the picture because LBJ withdrew his bid for election.

I don't know how old you are but it would seem you aren't really all that up on how much the hostage crisis was played up in the national news each night after night for over 400 days. It had a huge impact.

The Chennault thing didn't happen until October of '68.

That's right. One month before the election and when LBJ was the incumbent President. It would seem to serve as parallel to the investigators rush to understand what candidate Trump knew about Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and when he knew it. Trump and Roger Stone saw that their hero Nixon got away with it. So why couldn't they?

Meh. JFK used the information he got from his national security briefings on the planned Cuban invasion to hamstring Nixon in the Presidential debates.

Politics is a rough game.
