A Eulogy, or a campaign convention?

Deegan said:
This was the most disgusting display of partisan politics I have ever seen. What gives these politicians the right to turn a funeral in to a Democratic campaign convention? I was just watching the news, and felt I had to speak about this shame on our country today, I am truly sick to my stomach. First, 4 presidents attend this funeral of the wife of Martin Luther King, and Bush is fed to the lions. I want to know why this funeral was so important in the first place, since when have we given so much credence to the wife of a great man, and where will it end. I have not a single recollection of a wife ever receiving such an honor, or if they did, having it turn in to a disgusting political circus?

I just wanted some thoughts on this from others here, at this moment, I can barely even admit I am an American, much less be proud of that fact. This country has gone down the toilet, and it's getting worse by the day.

If the country is truely going down the toilet, then you have to remember that its your man at the helm.:2razz:

Ok, I did not see the funeral. However, I read a couple of articles about it and what was said by those in attendance. Under most circumstances, it would be pretty tacky. However, Coretta Scott King spoke out against the War in Iraq on several occasions. Coretta Scott King spoke out against many of the Bush Administrations domestic policies / agenda on numerous occasions. Especially the Bush Administrations attempts to destroy Affirmative Action. Martin Luther King was strong anti-War advocate. Martin Luther King was an avowed Socialist. He was a strong supporter of the Great Society. He was also the victim of an Executive Branch using wiretaps against him without Judicial Oversight. The Bush Administration has been at ideological odds with much of what Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King promoted.

okay, fine cnredd, I am not going to argue semantics with you over this. But if you dont want to be seen as one of the TOT type conservatives that give good conservatives a bad name, then dont align yourself with a redirect that was not meant for you. But hey, if you want to be part of that crowd, then accept the statement as being true to you too...makes no nevermind to me. But anyway, thanks for that link, it was very informative.

Why don't you address me to my face instead of going behind my back?

Why in the hell should I give Clinton credit for doing what was expected of him?

Good Clinton that's a good boy you sh!t outside and not on the carpet way to go that's a good boy, that's a good boy.

What's next on his list of stupid pet tricks? Is he going to lie to me and kiss my ass? After all I am a voter.

And I can certainly appreciate that, but as you said, "she spoke for these things" she certainly does not need others to speak for her, or to turn her final farewell, in to a three ring circus. Tacky? That does not begin to describe this outrage, we may have to come up with a brand new word for this atrocious behavior!

It already exists...

Liberalism...:2wave:

A) Making Alito's wife cry on national t.v..

B) Inviting Cindy Sheehan to the State of the Union.

C) Using the depiction of a limbless soldier for a political pawn.

D) Using a funeral as a bully pulpit to attack the President.

E) Referring to the troops as terrorists.

D) Saying that we can't win the war in Iraq.

F) Calling the President the worlds biggest terrorist.

Are you people trying to turn off middle America? It almost seems like you want to lose in '06. Well hay keep it up it's better than a slew of 527's and an armada of Swift Boaters.

Who said the country is going down the toliet? It's the Dems who are already in it and starting to twirl around. And with Dean, Pelosi, the Clintons at the helm what do you expect?

Under most circumstances, it would be pretty tacky. However, Coretta Scott King spoke out against the War in Iraq on several occasions.

And she became an expert of foriegn policy and national security exactly when?

Coretta Scott King spoke out against many of the Bush Administrations domestic policies / agenda on numerous occasions. Especially the Bush Administrations attempts to destroy Affirmative Action.

And you can give us an example of an attempt to destroy affirmative action, although I agree this legalized discrimination should be ended.

Martin Luther King was an avowed Socialist. He was a strong supporter of the Great Society.

All things which have brought great harm upon the people he was suppose to be helping.

He was also the victim of an Executive Branch using wiretaps against him without Judicial Oversight.

Well they were Democrats and they were in the Justice Department and those were domestic wiretaps. The Bush wiretaps are targeted at foreign signals.

The Bush Administration has been at ideological odds with much of what Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King promoted.

So that gives those in attendence the OK to attack the President who was invited there to honor her?

Democrats Use Another Funeral For Partisan Attacks

If I didn't know them any better, I would think that Democrats would have learned something from all the face they lost when they turned Wellstone's funeral into a bitter partisan spew-fest a couple of years ago.

Partisan Democrats from Carter to Lowery used Coretta Scott King's funeral on Tuesday to launch an array of smears at President Bush over everything from wiretapping to WMDs. And yes, of course, since there were blacks in the room, Democrats stayed true to form and race-baited the hell out of the audience of paranoid bigots and professional victims.

My instinct is to be outraged, but this sort of display has become a Democrat standard, and all we Republicans can do is shake our heads and watch them repulse the voters yet again with their blind animosity.

When Ruth Ginsburg was nominated for the Supreme Court, Republicans were troubled by her views and her direct affiliations with partisan feminist groups, but they honored the democratic process and put forward a quick confirming vote.

When Democrats were presented with an overwhelmingly qualified candidate for the Supreme Court, they ran a smear campaign against him and openly admitted that their concern was (rather than carrying out the will of the people) purely over losing partisan liberal influence in the Supreme Court. They painted Alito as an, "ultra-conservative," even though he had sided with pro-abortionists 2 out of 3 times in his tenure as a federal judge. His very first act after their outrageously unwarranted FILIBUSTER was defeated was to side with the majority AGAINST the death penalty on a case. Some extremist.

When conservatives put out an ad showing John Kerry taking contradictory positions on a variety of issues (factual), Democrats were airing Hitler ads, the infamous race-baiting masterpiece commercial with James Byrd, and Farenheit 9/11 (un-substantive crap).

The last time a Republican (Nixon) lost an incredibly close presidential election (which he actually didn't end up losing), he bowed out early to avoid scarring the country with partisan fury. When Democrats (Gore) had to face a narrow defeat, they disregarded what was best for the country (as usual) and dragged the whole country through this long, bitter partisan feud (by trying to keep changing the election rules until they got a result they liked) that ripped the country in half.

Democrats ALWAYS take the lowest of the low roads. Any serious comparison of behaviors always ends up showing that Democrats have zero concern for truth, duty, decency, and principle.

So why should it surprise anyone that they just stood before a corpse and, instead of saying anything respectful about or relevant to the deceased, attacked the president for (God forbid) trying to protect the country with wiretapping policies meant for TERRORISTS rather than common criminals?

We shouldn't expect better from that side of the aisle because when we deal with them, we aren't dealing with adults. We are dealing with infantile fanatics who will lie, cheat, smear, and take every bogus cheap shot imagineable to get power.

Yes, god forbid anyone tells the truth. A reasonable assessment of our situation in Iraq must mean that we hate America.

As much as I cannot stand this administration, using a funeral to attack the president was just wholly inappropriate. In fact, it was just downright unacceptable and it showed NO class.

That's not what the ground troops coming home say. We're winning, have been winning, and no matter how much the anti-war crowd and the liberal media wants to distort the evidence it can't change the fact that they have sided with 10,000 insurgents over 27 million Iraqis who want their freedom, glad Saddam is gone, and are hopeful about their future.

Re: Democrats Use Another Funeral For Partisan Attacks

I stopped voting Democrat on the national level long ago. I still voted Democrat on the state and local level quite often. But I'm about to say no more, if I don't like the Republican I can always vote libertarian these days just to protest.

Will someone ever come along and make the Democrat party decent again?

I dont think I hid anything I said, TOT. And if you shouldnt give Clinton credit for doing whats expected, then dont expect everyone to give Bush credit for doing what's expected. As for stupid pet tricks...well, the quoted post was quite amusing.

I think the people at the funeral appreciated the event - Clinton got a two minute standing ovation. At least Bush didn't get booed like he did at the pope's funeral.

Activism is what the Kings' life was all about! If the boy in the bubble can't take it, he should have stayed home, like Cheney did.

Oh yeah - Cheney voted against establishing MLK day as a holiday, I guess that's why he wasn't there.

Coretta would have loved it my friend!

Somehow I can't see King, or his wife taking enjoyment in shaming a man who took the time to attend their dinner party, much less their funeral. Please don't now try and smear the good name of these people........OMG, it's started already!

Bush has a 2% approval rating amongst African Americans. Take out the multimillionaire sports figures and it's probably closer to 1%.

Are you kidding me?

King was the kind of man that would respect another human being enough to not shame him at an event he invited him, much less one he did not. This has nothing to do with 2% of African Americans, and everything to do with a man who fought for what he deserved through intelligent debate, peaceful protest, and religious convictions, everything this three ring circus was not!

Come now professor, I don't have to hold your hand here, you know this was not a honor for this important family. This was just a lame attempt at stealing this intense spotlight, and using a funeral to score black votes, some for the Democrats, some for the good reverend and his collection plate, he even had the nerve to mention it in his rhetoric!

I'm not certain that Bush was invited. I know that he did change his mind at the last minute to attend.

The dream of social and racial equality pursued by the Kings is far from reality.
This funeral was a rare opportunity for people that disagree with the boy in the bubble to challenge him face to face.

If MLK was alive today my guess is that he would be lambasting W on the Iraq war, the response to Hurricane Katrina and warrantless wiretaps. The message at the funeral was right on the money.

Why don't you ask the people who were THERE! Did they look upset? Every black person I talked to loved the event. The only one's squirming where Bubble Boy and his wife.

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall of the limo as the president left.

I can't really argue with a Deaniac about this, we all know the lengths you will go professor, but I am speaking of the Kings, not the talking heads, the politicians, or the obedient parishioners.;)
