It's my impression that those who live in our southern states trend toward being supporters of Mr. Donald Trump. Some have called these the 'red' states. [Ed.: Amusing that 'red' is a term used to denote communism, nu?] As supporters of Mr. Trump, they would probably like to see him get lots of credit for Operation Warp Speed as a factor in the rapid development and distribution of vaccines against the Covid-19n virus.

Yet, when we check a map of the current percent of people vaccinated by state*, we find those states lagging behind the rest of the nation.

Go figure.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

I don't see any conflict between an area where the people are rightfully assigning credit where credit is due and an area where people are exercising their right to make their own decisions.

In fact, it's too bad people in "blue" states are not likely to do the same.

Sadly, the Neo Confederacy has spilled North. 90% of rural America now thinks just like Alabama.

Total Covid numbers are down but Covid is rampant among the unvaccinated. Not choosing to vaccinate is a stupid decision.

These adjusted numbers paint a far less optimistic picture: Washington’s case rate among unvaccinated people is as high as it was in late January, near the peak of Covid infections.

Hi!

The 'anti-vaxer's' may eventually achieve a degree of 'herd immunity', but they will pay the toll in deaths and illness.

Hi, calamity!

Thank you for taking time to respond.

I hadn't run across the phrase 'Neo Confederacy' before.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

Trump has followers all over the US.

Trump, and his followers, left rationality, consistency, logic, truth and reality in the dust many years ago.

No one should be surprised that the far right praises Trump for a vaccine that they refuse to take.

IMO it is truly sad that as a result of such blatantly contradictory and delusional views, these individuals are thus harming themselves, their families, and their communities.

I was going to make a similar observation. There is a through-line, or unbroken thread, from the "Democratic-Republicans" of Jefferson's time to the neo-confederates of our own. It is less geographic - although it started that way - as attitudinal. One can look at it as a rural-urban, or agricultural-industrial, divide. [Or more starkly slave-supporting/slave-opposing. Charles Blow covers it well in The Devil You Know, noting that the racists of the past were present as virulently in the industrial north as the agrarian south.]

It started, I think, in the reality that agricultural labor had to be more self-sufficient (or at least, in some cases, perceived themselves that way), and that attitude moved west with the pioneers and settlers. Urban dwellers have always needed to be more gregarious, reliant on others to achieve success, and, of necessity, more cooperative. The suburbs and exurbs are increasingly the intersection of the two, and are growing increasingly urban in thought.

The attitude, however, is often discordant with reality. There are millions of people who cannot wrap their minds around the reality that the United States is a nation of over 330 million souls and that the government of 1789 is not sufficient for the world we currently inhabit. That cognitive dissonance results in political volatility and "acting out" in a variety of ways. Racism, xenophobia, Trumpism, libertarianism are just some of the manifestations of it.

Hi!

Thank you for taking time to reply. What we are witnessing is also perfectly human. We h. sapiens are capable of holding two contradictory views at the same time. We are also capable of acting irrationally, even if it is not in our own interest to do so. It's who we, the people, are.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.
