A couple questions regarding Syria...

  1. Presuming we all come to agreement that Assad will hand over his chemical arsenal, how do we know he will hand all of it over? Inspections? Seems easily fooled. Honor system? Spare me.
  2. Presuming we all come to agreement that Assad will hand over his chemical arsenal, does this mean he got away with his chemical attack scot-free?
I ask #2 somewhat as a Devil's Advocate. I still oppose strikes, primarily because I think they'd be futile and for show only in terms of any real effect, but the point about standing up for people's rights and punishing the perpetrators is still a valid point. Even if he hands over his chemical weapons now, he still made his point, so to speak, and escaped with no real consequences.

1. We don't. And he won't.
2. Absolutely, and that's the whole point of the game he and the Russians are playing.

1) We don't even know if he used them or if one of the multiple rebel factions used them. Territories have been changing hands since the civil war began.

2) Of course we'll never know if he hands over 100% of them but really, what good are they to him? He can't use them again without provoking a real reaction even from America whose MIC is frustrated as it is.

3) Sure, he'll "get away with it". Look at the **** we get away with. We've broken as many laws and killed as many people as he has and you don't see any Americans in trouble over that. He'll either vanquish the rebels or he'll flee with his billions and live a life of luxury like Idi Amin and other "retired" dictators..

His wife used to be an investment banker. I bet she would have no trouble finding someplace to disappear to.

That is exactly one of the point of contentions. Even if they weren't in the middle of a civil war, it would be a difficult task.

Another issue is the punishment for violations. The US wants to use the threat of strikes, Russia does not want their ally flattened by the US.

It is possible he'll get away with it. E.g. Hussein was never directly punished for using chemical weapons multiple times. So it goes.

Well, that's the point of inspections. It's not like these things are kept on the down-low and there are no records of them. The Syrian govt has these records, these files which contain what and where the weapons are, and once you hand those over, you get UN troops there to secure them.

And there is no clear evidence that it was Assad who used the chemical weapons. There is still the very likely possibility that the rebels used it.

He conceivably still might if he ever felt desperate and backed into a corner. Kind of a "nothing to lose" situation.

I know some Escorts that work the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar luxury resorts and I don't think that he'll have a very tough life living in one of those places. Maybe he'll open a nightclub and Bashar's Bunnies will be the stage show.

Here's the thing. CWs are a ****ing joke as a "WMD". A nuke is a WMD and CWs are toys for morons. Even "backed into a corner", what can he accomplish? Kill another 853 children? How will that work out?

Spite. Not unlike Hitler's scorched earth policy when he knew he was going to lose.

You're thinking logically. Egomaniacs don't necessarily do the same.

If spite is a concern, how do you feel about India, Pakistan, Russia, Israel, France, the UK and scariest of all, the Americans who have real WMDs? The most Assad can do is kill a few hundred thousand more of his own people. Not that this is OK but you can't predict and/or manipulate what might happen in an unknown future.
