“The reason we have a higher number of reported COVID-19 deaths among older individuals than younger individuals is simply because every day in the U.S. older individuals die in higher numbers than younger individuals,” Briand said.

“Briand also noted that 50,000 to 70,000 deaths are seen both before and after COVID-19, indicating that this number of deaths was normal long before COVID-19 emerged. Therefore, according to Briand, not only has COVID-19 had no effect on the percentage of deaths of older people, but it has also not increased the total number of deaths. “

So an economist reached completely different conclusions than medical experts, looking at the same numbers. Very confusing. Maybe this is because medical experts are lousy at math.

The Johns Hopkins article was retracted, considered dangerous misinformation. Yeah it would be terrible if we knew the truth that the medical experts screwed up. Maybe we wouldn't trust them anymore.

All you have to do is do a little math to know that this is complete horse dung.

I'll leave it to the Calculator Commandos and Excel Experts to present the data.

Here's just one of many articles that can be found that debunk the high rate of cases and deaths.

Here's just one of many articles that can be found that debunk the high rate of cases and deaths.

Most of the deaths reported as caused by COVID 19 also had other causes. So we do not know if COVID 19 really caused all the reported deaths.

The article linked in the OP, by an economist, says the death rate from all causes in 2020 is NOT higher than in previous years (considering the population increase). No one has debunked that statement, as far as I can tell. They retracted the article because it's "dangerous" for people to think the virus isn't very dangerous.

You missed the point of the OP. It does NOT deny that large numbers of COVID 19 deaths are being reported. It says that the all cause death rate has not increased much, and therefore many of deaths reported as COVID 19 might actually have other causes.

I want to find out a comparison of monthly all cause mortality for 2020 with previous years. That would answer the question, but it's hard to find.

Here's an up to date comparison. Note how some countries limit the spread better while others save more patients!

Hi!

There's a bit of truth in the bold face statement above. Old people do have a higher rate of death than young people. That's almost tautological, though. All older people die. Only a small percent of young people will die [Ed.: Or else there would be no old people, right? Right?]

That said, it has bearing on the Covid-19 viral deaths only in that older people already have a number of medical problems that predispose them to death, given enough of a medical challenge.

As far as the second assertion goes, it is unsupported by the evidence and should be relegated to the trash bin.

Regards, stay safe 'n well. Remember the prophylactic Big 3: masks, hand washing and physical distancing.

Reminder. I try to respond to all who quote my posts. If you do not get a response from me, it may be that you've made it onto my 'Ignore' list.

The percentage of deaths of old people should be greater than usual during the pandemic, since they are much more likely to die from COVID 19. However, that analysis says the percentage of old people dying during the pandemic is not much different than recent previous years. If true, that would mean there has not been a pandemic after all. It would be an artifact based on over-diagnosis of COVID 19.

It was noted even by the NYT during the lockdowns in Spring how heart attacks seem to have disappeared, this data shows that 'somehow', covid seems to be curing heart disease......... by overcounting covid deaths by including those who died WITH covid together wit those who have died FROM covid (something we DON'T do with any other similar disease like the flu, etc.)

Not only is it not statistically different than previous years but we also don't see a widening increase in those deaths compared to others through THIS year as covid has gone through the country.

So your position is that every spring in NYC and countless other places around the world, hospitals get completely overwhelmed with people and governments have to frantically beg for ventilators and bring in refrigerated trucks to deal with all the dead bodies?

We had 300,000 excess deaths in the US between Jan and Oct., according to the CDC.

And from the John Hopkins Newsletter:

Briand was quoted in the article as saying, “All of this points to no evidence that COVID-19 created any excess deaths. Total death numbers are not above normal death numbers.” This claim is incorrect and does not take into account the spike in raw death count from all causes compared to previous years. According to the CDC, there have been almost 300,000 excess deaths due to COVID-19. Additionally, Briand presented data of total U.S. deaths in comparison to COVID-19-related deaths as a proportion percentage, which trivializes the repercussions of the pandemic. This evidence does not disprove the severity of COVID-19; an increase in excess deaths is not represented in these proportionalities because they are offered as percentages, not raw numbers.

Briand also claimed in her analysis that deaths due to heart diseases, respiratory diseases, influenza and pneumonia may be incorrectly categorized as COVID-19-related deaths. However, COVID-19
disproportionately affects those with preexisting conditions, so those with those underlying conditions are statistically more likely to be severely affected and die from the virus.

Because of these inaccuracies and our failure to provide additional information about the effects of COVID-19,
The News-Letter decided to retract this article. It is our duty as a publication to combat the spread of misinformation and to enhance our fact-checking process. We apologize to our readers.

So this is the new conspiracy theory by the far right...
How precisely is it a conspiracy, and where is your evidence linking it to 'the far right'?

interesting and laughable.
An insult yet no refuting of the actual info.

Ah yes, NYC's government 'frantically begged' for ventilators, complained they weren't given enough when they were given some, and then never even touched them or went beyond their own original ventilator stock.

In short, the way the paper did it, using percentages instead of raw numbers MISREPRESENTS the numbers and end up being misleading.

Here is a simple example: say in prior years heart disease killed 30 out of 100 people who died, and this year, in addition to same 30 out of 100 deaths, there is additional 30 deaths due to COVID. Therefore...

Prior years: 30% dead due to heart disease = 30 / 100
This year: 23% dead due to heart disease = 30 / 130

Oh look - heart disease killed LESS percentage of people EVEN THOUGH it actually killed SAME number of people.

Now apply this to all other causes and you get that dumb paper - all causes will show lesser percentages from other causes BECAUSE COVID killed additional 300,000 people.

Ah yes, NYC's government 'frantically begged' for ventilators, complained they weren't given enough when they were given some, and then never even touched them or went beyond their own original ventilator stock.
I dare you to tell a nurse in NYC that they never "touched" ventilators in March-April. I suspect the response would bring you out of your delusion pretty quickly.

Hi!

The results of the study should not be all that surprising. Let's take a case of a person with severe heart problems -- severe enough for a prognosis of, say three months of life remaining. That person then contracts the Covid-19 viral disease and dies in three weeks. Note the time difference. The death would be reported, quite rightly, as due to the Covid-19 virus. That person, though, would not be reported some months later as having died of heart disease. So --- we may be dealing with a quirk of statistics rather than a severe re-evaluation of the lethality of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Actual info? You mean the CDC info that states 299k extra deaths from January to October 2020?

Not only is it not statistically different than previous years but we also don't see a widening increase in those deaths compared to others through THIS year as covid has gone through the country.

So yeah it's so confusing. And the NYT says that cases are surging and hospitals are overwhelmed, health care workers are exhausted, the sky is falling.

So what is true?

We had 300,000 excess deaths in the US between Jan and Oct., according to the CDC.

And from the John Hopkins Newsletter:

Yeah but most people get terribly confused by data, even those great CDC experts. So an economist analyzed it and got something very different.

Yeah but, if she were correct it would be terribly embarrassing to all the experts who created the panic. It's easy to confuse everyone with numbers. Very easy.
