Pacific cyclones are less common than they have been in 5000 years according to a peer reviewed paper in the journal Quaternary Science Reviews.

By examining sediment in deep lagoons behind reef barriers in the Pacific these investigators were able to reconstruct the storm activity in the Pacific going back 5000 years. The results show that cyclones are uncommon now compared to the last 5000 years. Precession of the earth on its axis and El Nino oscillations appear to correlate with changes in cyclone activity.
