They might not want it when they get it, and it's too late at that point, but they will ALWAYS get what they want. One of the big misses most people have to live with, is that government did not create society, society saw the need for and created a government. It's purpose at the time of creation was to take care of the day to day affairs that the citizenry was too busy working to take care of. It was never intended to have unlimited control over the population or to be a moral mirror. Government cannot regulate or enforce morality and that was never it's intention or design. Sadly, the people of the US have forgotten the true purpose of the government and allowed it to grow and assume powers it was never intended to have. So many of the citizens are fine with this dynamic that we indeed got the government we wanted.

That's definitely not true. If it were true you wouldn't need criminal laws and punishments in order to force people to pay taxes to fund the state.

As one famous leftist put it: "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun."

That's the source of government power. Take away the gun, and government would disappear overnight.

It’s more like the people get the government that they deserve.........VOTE 2020!

Sorry, but that is a nonsensical rant, fitting the 'libertarian' label, showing no understanding at all of government (instead the false Libertarian ideology). Every time I see things like this, they demand a long post of correction, and it's never worth the time.

The purpose of government is not 'to do the things people are too busy to do'. And no, people do not always get the government they want. As for morality, a simple question - is murder a moral issue?

Someone isn't paying attention.

Since you missed it, the Republican Party is increasingly in thrall to the ultra-rich and corporations, who increasingly demand unpopular policies. As a result, rather than modifying their platform, they are pushing for more and more anti-democratic measures, including but not limited to:

• Voter suppression (mostly targeting minorities)
• Gerrymandering
• Delegitimizing mail-in voting
• Deliberately kneecapping incoming Democratic governors and legislators
• Larding up the courts with right-wing partisans
• Refusing to follow numerous electoral norms (such as releasing tax returns
• Ignoring, if not encouraging, foreign interference in elections

As a result, they pass laws with little support (e.g. tax cuts for the rich) and repeatedly refuse to meet, or actively try to take away, services the majority of the public wants (e.g. better health care).

Yeah, it's not that simple. It goes both ways. Government influences the rest of society, and vice versa.

It's purpose at the time of creation was to take care of the day to day affairs that the citizenry was too busy working to take care of. It was never intended to have unlimited control over the population or to be a moral mirror.
Sorry not sorry, but that is vastly incorrect.

To start with, it isn't exactly like there was a specific moment where humans lived in a State of Nature. There's some type of social organization in every society, even band-level societies.

Nor was there a time when people said "ya know what? I don't have enough time in my day to build roads, let someone else do it." Rather, government has many roles that it has acquired over the years, including but not limited to protecting the populace, regulating commerce, providing for common goods, neutrally arbitrating disputes, and more. It isn't that people don't have the time, it's that they can't provide those services.

Government cannot regulate or enforce morality and that was never it's intention or design.
Actually, it can, it does, and it was.

Governments regulate morality all the time. Laws against murder, theft, rape, assault and other criminal acts are clearly based in moral concerns. Demands to legalize or outlaw drugs, abortion, same-sex marriage and more are also obviously based in moral concerns. So are regulating businesses, establishing safety nets, offering health care and benefits to senior citizens....

Sadly, the people of the US have forgotten the true purpose of the government...
Oh, really? How, exactly, do you square that with "people ALWAYS get the government they want?"

Maybe, just maybe, when the people demand Social Security, national parks, civil rights protections, auto safety regulations, same-sex marriage and more, they do so out of legitimate concerns and legitimate functions for a government. What a concept.

Like most leftists, you have no idea what you're taking about. The first transcontinental highway in the US was built with private money:

Is it any wonder why leftist governments inevitably become totalitarian? Note how this Pol Pot wannabe supports having the rotten government up your ass and involved in every single aspect of your life. The creed of progressivism was proclaimed by the life-long socialist Benito Mussolini in 1928:
"Everything in the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State"
