A $125 Million Private Island Owned By J.P. Morgan's Grandson Is Now For Sale

I grew up going to the beach in a part of Glen Cove called Dorsoris. This was a wide stream separating the mainland from the big island that we called Morgan's island where the well known millionaire JP Morgan had his mansion. There was a single lane bridge connecting the island to the mainland shore. Interestingly, it had a guard post on the mainland end.

The tidal flats offshore were full of 'pisser' clams that we would go as a family to dig up at low tide. My mother would bake excellent clam pies.

On this is land we could drive past Morgan's mansion which had become the residence of the Soviet mission to the U.N & then a convent. As I found out later when I had a police radio scanner, the FBI watched the Soviets/Russians 24/7, following their vehicles. They would talk in code on the radio & you could hear words like 'Bucket' when referring to a car.

I was not aware of this island but all the land in that area is/was owned by the Morgan family.

Cool... are you thinking about making an offer?

The Morgans have made a lot of money developing the land around this part of Glen Cove. Buying this land in the 1920s was a very good investment for them.

Driving on Morgan's Island on the Sound side, you can see the pier stone pilings going out from the shore to deep water where Morgan had his immense yacht, the CORSAIR. I believe it was likely used to get him & his family to their summer cottage in Newport, RI. A building near his mansion was the house of the ship's captain.
