The headline: 6 teenagers arrested in drive-by shooting at Iowa high school that left 1 dead, 2 hospitalized

The link:
The lede: "(CNN)Six teenagers were arrested and charged with murder following a drive-by shooting outside a high school in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday that left one teenager dead and two others in the hospital, police said on Tuesday."

The comment: Once again, our current US gun laws -- federal, state and local -- as well as their level of enforcement, were unable to avery a tragic death by gunshot.

A death by gunshot occurs, on average, every 30 minutes in the United States of America. One every 30 minutes. Two per hour. 48 per day. 336 each week. 1,460 each month. 17,500 each year. Every year.

Deaths by gunshot, not prevented by our present laws and their level of enforcement.

Regards, stay safe 'n well . . . 'n un-shot.

It’s important to note that guns caused this. Guns drove by the school and indiscriminately killed innocent children. We really need to start putting guns in jail.

It certainly won’t be long before some redneck, racist, Putin supporting right winger comes along and says something stupid about “criminals” instead of guns but the sane, beautiful people of the world know that guns, not people, are to blame for these killings

The black guns are coming to get us. Flee flee while you can.

(I trust you get the reference. ;))

The OP sees an article about 6 pieces of shit that commit a drive by and kill a 15 year od they targeted while wounding two girls not involved, and their response is "not enough gun control".

Holy ****.

Glad they caught the kids, to bad iowa doesn’t have the death penalty to properly punish those in the car.

Very surprising that this happened in Des Moines Iowa. Glad the perpetrators were caught.

That said, not sure what additions to the current gun laws could have prevented this. Was the firearm used legally owned by the teen who misused it? Was it stolen?

It's good they caught them, hopefully they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Hi, twf!

What is there about Des Moines that makes it resistant to such a shooting?

This sentence grabbed my attention.

I immediately googled certain statistics for Des Moines.

Personally, I am not "surprised" that this incident happened in 2022 Des Moines.

We need to pass laws that prohibit persons under 18 from purchasing weapons.

You do know it's already illegal for teenagers to have guns right, outside of a very few exceptions? What law would you implement that could have averted this?

I can show you firearm homicides across all demographics if you would like.

Shit... guess the laws aren't the problem.

Hi again.

I stand by my statement in the OP. "Once again, our current US gun laws -- federal, state and local -- as well as their level of enforcement, were unable to avert a tragic death by gunshot." [Ed.: Misspelling in quote corrected.]

Hi, Ikari!

There are a number of ways of approaching crime. One is to apprehend the criminal after the crime has occurred. It has the disadvantage that, in cases of murder, there is no redress possible for the victim. There are other things which can be done to reduce the level of certain crimes.

And again I point out, it is already illegal for these teenagers to possess firearms. So how is this a failure of the law? What law could have been implemented that would have prevented this?

What was I doing at those ages? 14-going to school and working part-time in a deli. At 15thru 18 going to school and working part-time in a major grocery store.

Oh come on. You must have shot a kid or two. Didn't everybody?

Iowa law: 18 to purchase long guns, 21 for handguns. You really think they "bought" these legally? Snort.

Sounds gang related but they make no mention of it in the article. Sure hope these minors get charged as adults.
Which probably means the perps are not "white". If "white" kids did it, that (their whiteness) would be headlines.

Gee, just looked that up. That funny MSM, so predictable!

"Police named the suspects as Octavio Lopez, 17; Henry Valladares-Amaya, 17; Manuel Buezo, 16; Romero Perdomo, 16; Alex Perdomo, 15; and Nyang Chamdual, 14. All are from Des Moines." https://www.wtvy.com/2022/03/08/6-teens-charged-with-murder-shooting-outside-iowa-high-school/

These killer’s ignored multiple laws in order to commit their crime. There is no law that will prevent this when you have people who will ignore those laws. We need to fix people if we want to fix the problems they cause.

Hi, Chillfolks!

I agree that, given almost any set of restrictive laws, there may well be some who will still find a way to commit the crime those laws are intended to prevent.

On that we agree completely.

That, however, does not mean that restrictive laws will not prevent some crimes and thus reduce the crime level. As laws become more and more restrictive, them effort required to circumvent them increases. As the level of effort required increases, the number of people willing to make that effort will decrease.

In my state the Democrats passed some gun controls laws designed to reduce violence such as background checks. Red flag laws, one hand gun a month, and safe storage.

The problem is each year after those laws were passed the seven cities area I live in has seen murders spike. At what point do you realize what you tried did not work so repeal it and you are a different approach?
