The new Utah NSA facillity will have 5 ZETA-BYTES of memory Capacity.

That's equal to the memory of 312 BILLION I-PHONES.

1 ZETA-BYTE is equal to enough I-Phones stacked flat on top of each other to surpass the moon.

This is enough memory capacity to hold every cell-phone call, every Facebook post, every Forum post, text message, Picture and video, etc, in perpetuity from now on.

That also excludes any new file Compression code that could even attribute to more capacity in the future.

Is this for Al-Qaeda ? Terrorist ?
 
With all that storage, I don't see any threat for personal privacy. Unless someone is going to sort through the trillions of messages/calls/texts/posts made each day...

i say alleged facility because stacking 3TB hard drives on each other would require a pile about 8400km tall to store that much data. Not including mounting brackets, gaps, cooling, casing, power supply....

Edit2: ****, that calculation was for ONE Zettabyte. So like 40,000km.

4TB drives are available now, so 1.25 billion drives would be required to store 5ZB.

Each drive is about 146 x 101.6 x 19mm, or .281 cubic meters. Total size would be 352,298,000 cubic meters. Roughly the volume of a large container ship.

Each drive costs about $180, using the low end of newegg prices, so about 225 billion dollars.

And all this doesn't include anything but bare drives. You need to mount them, power them, and cool them, which is no easy task that that scale. Somewhere in the 10GW range to power the drives alone, plus the rest of the computing hardware required to actually try and use that much data. And then you have to dissipate all that heat.

Finding a supplier for over a billion hard drives may also prove a challenge, as this would be about two years worth of global production spent entirely on these 4tb models. (Obviously the bulk of drives produced are not 4tb)

Well I assume the government has access to things the consumers do not. Wonder how much RAM they have to even process that for viruses.

After this monstrosity of a Data Center is built I don't want to hear anything from the green energy folks.

I use to work on EMS for large Server Farms. The amount of power to cooling your average medium sized data center is massive.

I'm going off memory here from a few years ago working with a data center.

First their was two utillity feeds into the data center, grid isolated so if one went down the other would be there to pick up the slack.

There were massive 2.7 Megawatt generators for reduncancy. Huge tanks of diesel were kept on site with tank heaters to keep the water out of the fuel. Diesels very hydroscopic

Cooling was accomplished with multiple 700 Ton Trane Centrifigal Water Chillers that sent out 42 degree water into 30 Ton Chill Water Cooled AC units. A " ton" of air is 400 CFM.

Rows of servers were run off of PDUs and everything was sent back to a massive switchgear that would perform the instant switch over in case of a powet failure.

Each data center ran a continuous 2,000 Amp Load on the Utillity. At 480/3 phase stepped down through transformers at the PDUs, the AC ran on 480 3 phase power, thats a massive amount of power.....use OHMs law to figure Watts.

Their UPS facillity was massive, filled with racks and racks of 900 dollar 6 volt batteries for a few minutes of emergency power. It also had to be cooled.

There was also Co-Lo cation and a team of 24/7 techs working to keep each Server up and running.

Those data farms I worked with cant hold a candle to the UTAH facillity.

NSA does provide some measure of the computing power at its new data farm in Utah. It requires 65 megawatts of power, enough for 65,000 homes. It also has its own power substation. In fact, Davis of the NSA says, the availability and relatively low cost of power put Utah at the top of the list for the center.

That much power generates so much heat that the computers will fry without 1.5 million gallons of cooling water a day.

Tish!!!!..Zeta is 1e21...you can buy 1.5 Terra bits 1e9 at any computer hardware store dirt cheep. Given progression of Hard Drives in the past ten years...I'm sure we will hit that number in less than 10 to 15 years(or a bit loner!!!)

I think is 8 quadrillion Bits so it is 90, 949 Terra Bytes (I remember this because when heard the first time I thought...how stupid to use Bits, rather than Bytes!...Then I assumed the writer of the show assume Bits is a plural of a Byte! and hence the faux pas)

i remember when i bought my first add-on drive. i was completely stoked; it was 100 meg, and with doublespace and the master 40 meg drive, i theorized that i would never fill it up. my, how times have changed.
 
The digital age is so cool. I cant' wait for it to progress beyond search/data mining for advertisers. What's beyond search/advertising? Prediction? AI? Have we reached the point where we can model the inefficiency of our archaic political system vs other modern best practice systems? :) I swear it took a shameful 5 full seconds to get Diving's "Commander Data" reference...shame on me!!

With enough data collected on everything and an analyzing algorithm, you could create a program that could ultimately predict the future movements of groups, and with enough individual information could predict what you will do / say / think before you even do / say / think it.

I think you have made a excellent point. With historic data and trends on specific demographics a highly effective program could be created that would lead to what are essentially highly accurate and instant, educated guess's.

The need for that much data capacity has yet to be explained so there is no telling.

All I know is the capacity of this data center seems to be hyper-proportional to what it's stated intention requires. IF, they're not planning on using it to monitor everything we do, then it's being built under false pretenses for some other function.

I would actually be more impressed with a attempt at building a massive super processor than just data storage that is unless they already have a super computer that just lacks data .
