5 " ZETA-BYTES " of Memory

All I know is the capacity of this data center seems to be hyper-proportional to what it's stated intention requires. IF, they're not planning on using it to monitor everything we do, then it's being built under false pretenses for some other function.

I would actually be more impressed with a attempt at building a massive super processor than just data storage that is unless they already have a super computer that just lacks data .

The point isn't to monitor everything that everyone does. The point is to have the data just in case this or that individual suddenly becomes interesting.

Say, for example, someone donates $2500 to one of Obama's opponents.

Well I assume the government has access to things the consumers do not. Wonder how much RAM they have to even process that for viruses.

It's certainly possible, but the logistics are just mind-boggling. Solid-state drives would dramatically reduce the size, heat generated, and power consumption, but the cost would skyrocket right along with it.

And who the hell is going to build them that many drives?

Asians.

The new Utah NSA facillity will have 5 ZETA-BYTES of memory Capacity.

That's equal to the memory of 312 BILLION I-PHONES.

1 ZETA-BYTE is equal to enough I-Phones stacked flat on top of each other to surpass the moon.

This is enough memory capacity to hold every cell-phone call, every Facebook post, every Forum post, text message, Picture and video, etc, in perpetuity from now on.

That also excludes any new file Compression code that could even attribute to more capacity in the future.

Is this for Al-Qaeda ? Terrorist ?

One of the then young men who trained in the center where I was computer operations manager assisted in the installation of this one. It's complete now:

Titan supercomputer to be loaded with 'world's fastest' storage system

For the last 15 or so years the Japanese supercomputers and the systems at ORNL have been alternately holding a reputation for having the worlds most powerful mainframe computing systems.

let us hope that they used Iphones. Then it will be easy to hack, crap the hell out when they want to use it, and cost 4 times as much.

Just a small point. back in the 80's when i got my first computer the guy who sold it to me told me to get the extra large 20 megabyte hard drive. It would be all I would ever need. Data has a way of becoming much larger much quicker. I had trouble filling up my first 1 GB HD. I would be more ticked we just pissed money away trying to hold everyone's data and by the time we have another president it will be woefully obsolete. The use of data on the internet is increasing geometrically. What you cannot imagine today is a drop in the bucket in a decade.

That is not to mention the military idiocy of having a singular point to attack. I do hope they actually have some redundancy. It would be terrible to have all your spy data in one place. The entire purpose of the internet for military and government purposes was a diversified system that could not be taken out in just one hit. Not only does the idea seem extremely intrusive and expensive, but it also seems to be tactically retarded.

But imagine the fapping they could do with all that porn.

For my son's 16th b'day circa 1980 I gave him a state-of-the-art Atari 800 PC. It boasted a standard 36 thousand bytes with a 12 kb expansion board. Today he is in charge of software architecture for a company in Atlanta. Turned out good I think.

I don't know what a zetabyte is, I just know I need one...

The prefix zetta indicates the seventh power of 1000 or one sextillion (1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) bytes

Obviously bigger than these:

KB
1,024,000 bytes = 1 megabyte MB
1,073,741,824 bytes = 1 gigabyte GB
1,099,511,627,776 bytes = 1 terabyte TB
1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes = 1 petabyte PB
1,152,921,504,606,846,976 bytes = 1 exabyte EB

When can I buy a zettabyte on a thumb drive?

It's coming....on that all one has to do is look at the changes in technology every 18 months all the way back to the NASA moon mission. That's when the first serious miniaturization began. Before that diode vacuum tubes were state-of-the-art.

I'm glad conservatives are against the Patriot Act. Wait . . . they're not.

I'm glad liberals are against it too, since the Senate passed it in 2001 with a vote of 98-1.

Thank God nobody comes to you with any sort of intelligent viewpoints or useful information. They'd be immensely disappointed.

LOL...the congress was Republican from 1994 to 2006. That's how Bush got his two tax cuts through though they still had to use reconciliation to block Democratic opposition. The 106th congress had been arguing about how to use the Clinton surplus and George Bush took care of that for them. He gave it to the rich through tax cuts and doubled the national debt from $5.6 trillion to nearly $12 trillion.

Another change Bush brought about. The designers of the debt clock in Manhattan, NYC never dreamed the debt would ever accumulate to $10's of trillions and they had to modify that on George W. Bush's watch.

What's the problem? They don't intend to use the data. They are collecting it just to.......well......umm.......

So Bush got everything passed through with a Senate comprised of 98% Republicans? Tell me - since that goes beyond super-majority, what should we call it? Ultra-majority? Uber-majority? OMFG-majority?

Also, he cut everyone's taxes. Nice try.

Your bias is like an unzipped fly. It's showing.

Do you even have a clue what filibuster is? That requires 60 votes for a majority instead of 51...which no doubt is what the founders wanted. The Republicans have used it or threatened to use it repeatedly for the last 15 years.

Yeah....a millionaire gets a new Mercedes each year for his part of tax cuts. A working man who earns enough gets the price of a muffler for one.

How do you think this happened?

I hate how iPhones seem to be a new unit of measurement.

For the last 15 or so years the Japanese supercomputers and the systems at ORNL have been alternately holding a reputation for having the worlds most powerful mainframe computing systems.

Speed is at this point irrelevent and most BIG SuperComputers only lag or lead each other by a relative small amount of processing speed.

I think we have the Jaguar.

What's next or maybe they already have it, will be a revolutionary algorithm that redifines how we use that speed and data capabillity.

We have massive storage capabillity and super fast processors but are still limited down to the level of input/output functions.

The upgraded system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory(ORNL) is named Titan. It was a Jaguar before the upgrade.

Gotchya...been awhile since I looked up a Super Computer.
