5. Swaziland: 77.5 per 100,000

According to a UNICEF report, one in three Swazi girls experience sexual violence before age 18. The country has the highest HIV/AIDS rate in the world. In 2012, Swaziland banned women from wearing miniskirts and midriff-revealing tops saying they provoke rape.

4. Lesotho: 82.7 per 100,000

Unequal gender relations and belief in the sexual entitlement of men are entrenched in cultural and social norms in Lesotho. In the majority of cases, victims of sexual violence are silenced.

3. Botswana: 92.9 per 100,000

In a 2009 study, 4.9% of 1244 women of 13–24 years reported having been raped in their lifetimes. 10.3% of 654 women reported that they had been raped in their lifetimes in a 2011 study. 4.6% had been raped in the past year. 3.9% of 613 men had been raped in their lifetimes and 4.2% had raped in the past year. Rape victims, said Mbulawa, range from as young as five years to 85 years, while the perpetrators mostly in their youths.

2. South Africa: 132.4 per 100,000

More than 25 percent of South African men have raped; of those, nearly half said they had raped more than one person, says a new report by the Medical Research Council (MRC).

Of the 27.6 percent of men who had committed rape, "23.2 percent of men said they had raped two to three women, 8.4 percent had raped four to five women, 7.1 percent said they had raped six to 10, and 7.7 percent said they had raped more than 10 women or girls," the report said.

Asked about their age at the first time they had forced a woman or girl into sex, 9.8 percent said they were under 10 years old, 16.4 percent were 10-14 years old, 46.5 percent were 15-19 years old, 18.6 percent were 20-24 years old, 6.9 percent were 25-29 years old, and 1.9 percent were 30 or older."

For every 25 men accused of rape, only one is convicted of the crime. South Africa also has the world highest number of people living with HIV/AIDS: 5.5 million in a population of about 48 million.

1. Democratic Republic of the Congo: 774.61 per 100,000

More than 1,100 women are raped every day in the Democratic Republic of Congo, making sexual violence against women 26 times more common than previously thought, a study has concluded.

More than 400,000 women and girls between the ages of 15 to 49 were raped in the war-ravaged country in central Africa during a 12-month period in 2006 and 2007, according to the study published in the American Journal of Public Health on Wednesday.

That is 26 times more than the 15,000 women that the United Nations has reported were raped there during the same 12 months.
