5 Bicyclists Killed in Michigan After Pickup Truck Crashes Into Them

It's not arrogant idiocy. That would be getting upset at people using roads they are supposed to be using because it may slightly inconvenience them.

If bikers dont know that they are supposed to be single file on the outside edge of the road if cars want to get by then we can certainly write law so that they get informed.

I hope the driver receives the appropriate punishment, but bicyclists should not be allowed on the road without a partitioned lane.

there are no partitioned lanes (which are hardly safe either, i never use them) or hell, even sidewalks in most of michigan. Most of the state is totally unsafe for everyone to the point i question whether human-operated vehicles should be allowed at all

that will certainly raise demands to tax the piss out of mike illitch

When I went to Michigan State I often did 30-50 miles a trip, usually mostly going South. I had a couple of really close calls on 45 mph roads with people going 60.

BTW: I rode alone most of the time, there were never more than 3 of us. No way in hell would I agree to ride those roads 1 of 5 even. I know what these people were doing, they wanted to slow the cars down, a lot, by being pricks.

This is one of those many cases where I know both sides of the argument. HOWEVER, I say bikes MUST be single file on the side of the road when cars want to pass on a 2 lane road.

This is my position.

Seriously.

Yea because Michigan makes all the right decision.

michigan is one of the most draconian states out there, but the courts tend to favor drunk drivers over completely vulnerable people because big bizness. It's always regressive one way or the other

same reason it's impossible to fail a driver's test at 16. I even knew a guy who attempted to go between the train barriers and then STOPPED, put it in reverse, and then finally continued past the other barrier with the train approaching and he still passed

20+riders on a two lane road when the bikes will not get in single file on the side of the road will make it so it will almost never be safe to pass, so your argument fails. In that case the bikers are not sharing the road with the cars, probably cause they want to talk and ****, which does not work for me.

How often are you coming across 20+ riders? And if you do, they can allow safe passing as well. And if not, there typically ARE laws that govern that, on both sides.

Just because some are jerks doesn't mean you have some righteous anger against them.

Slow down, pass when it's safe.

Then go write a law. Until then, slow down and pass when it's safe. This isn't rocket science.

Thankfully where I live the roads are too hilly and too dangerous, I dont have to deal much with this problem.

Plus it rains a lot.

a state of shock doesn't allow you to flee so far

When I was in Arizona I saw a mother that had walked off in the desert almost 2 blocks after a fatality accident. A van had flipped over and the child was killed. The father who was driving was unconscious and the mother had wondered out into the desert clearly in shock. I do not know how far she would have walked had we not arrived so quickly. I have been to several bad accidents and people do react differently to such situations. My partner had to chase down a teenager running in a blind panic. Initially fleeing from a terrible situation is by no means strange but a normal response to fear and panic.

Getting back to very real dangerous situation of bicycles on the road with cars. I wish more bike and walk/hike ways are put in as roads are built or repaved. I think our highways should have a hike and bike lane. We have plenty of money to fight wars all over the planet for the special interest of the rich and powerful this would be chump change in comparison.

Most small towns and small cities have a main street that should have bike and hike ways along side the roads. Especially in the NE where you have never ending towns only a few miles apart. Most people avoid riding a bike or even rollerblading because it is so dangerous.

Plus with the assistance of high powered rechargeable batteries powering bicycles they could be a very real alternative form of transportation. You could pedal for exercise and get an assist on hills or to go slightly faster to cover more distance.

The sad reality is when the inevitable collision between a bicycle and cars ends up in a fatality or at the very least serious injury. With potholes and some of the cracks in our roads bicyclist are in real danger when riding in close proximity to cars. That is just the facts.

So there's no need to be so upset about it. Slow down, pass when safe. And you don't even have to do it all that often, apparently. Hills and mountains don't stop cyclists here in CO. But it's still not bad, there's plenty of room to pass when it's safe to do so.

Not really, inside the city of Seattle they ride aggressively, but the city is a low speed environment requiring attention anyway.

I've driven a 48 foot tractor trailer right up freakin' first avenue through pioneer square and pikes place. just go slow and pay attention they're not a problem. outside of the city there's hardly any one them except on saturday mornings

Holy crap. I live in Spokane and have many times driven that same stretch in downtown Seattle (in a car). Have driven a semi in an industrial area before and no way in hell can I imagine driving one through that area. With the tourists, the homeless, the locals hurrying and darting bicycles I would go nuts maneuvering through that.

He was driving erratically at high speeds and came around a blind curve and there they were....BAM....he plowed right into the middle of them. People in the vicinity said it sounded like he hit a tree. Then he got out of his truck and fled the scene....only to be found a block or two away.

Came around a curve and there they were? They may have been impeding traffic; depending the local and state laws.

plenty once we tax the millionaires appropriately

What a stupid response- You socialists, I thought, had other needs ahead of that.

anything is a better use of resources than handouts to billionaires

No, bicycles are traffic, they belong on the road. It would be nice to have proper bike lanes, but not all places have them and when they don't, bikes need to be in lane on the road.

Just don't run them over, it's not that tough.

We have bicycle lanes in many places here. They have a few problems. The biggest problem is maintenance. The lanes not only tend to not get swept, but are used as dumping grounds for trash off the main road. The second problem is they become multiple use. Pedestrians, small children, and even horses use the paths.

Too bad he wasn't some rich kid, else he could just get off with a slap on the wrist.

If not, mabye he could try for the "poorfluenza" defense?

Here in Santa Fe they do the ghost bikes thing for cyclist killed by a car driver.

Don't know why people hate bicyclists so much. I'd much rather get the annoying small penis, jacked up, oversized pickup truck (where the driver can't even see the road 20 feet in front of him, and he's such a pansy assed fraud that he takes his $30,000 suspension over a speed bump at 1/2 mile an hour and it will NEVER be seen in the actual off-road dirt)... yeah, I'd much rather take THEM off the road.

sadly, your leftwing tax schemes don't really affect billionaires and most billionaires are paying more taxes in a month than you pay in your life time. Envy is a poor basis for public policy. Maybe bike riders should pony up the money for these barriers?

Anyone who has ever encountered cyclists on Chuckanut Drive in WA has likely freaked out.

I rode my bike from Vancouver, Canada to San Francisco, CA last summer along these very roads (and highway 101 the entire way down). Something like 1300 miles when all done.

Tons of bikes out there and everyone on the road was very courteous. It doesn't take much effort to give everyone their space (car, truck, bike, or person).

I ride in Chicagoland all the time and people here are pretty good too. When you consider all the taxis stopping, buses stopping, moving vans taking up entire lanes, etc...the little bicyclist is the least of anyone's problems.

When people in the city are more courteous than those of you in rural and suburban areas, well you should really look at yourself closely.
