In response to another thread, I decided to start a separate thread on 4th Generation Warfare.
Here's one of the best analysis of 4GW that I'm aware of. Another site that takes a little less indepth view is Global Guerillas overview of the subject.

4GW is what we are smack bad in the middle of. It is not a fight for land or resources, it's a fight for the "hearts and minds" of the people. Right now, it's one that we are still adapting to and fighting just as much on our own soil as on foreign soil. This is exactly what our enemies want. People talk about taking the fight to the terrorists, but the reaility is that they have takent he fight to us. They have us fighting amongst ourselves as much as we are fighting aginst them. This the exact result they want.
So what's the answer? How do you fight against 4GW when the fight is not on the battlefield, but in the newspapers, the TV and splattered across the web?

Really, the same as always. Be honest, open, ethical and moral. In the long run it will show and overcome.

Great non-answer, BigDog.

This is a war against an idea, the only way to beat an idea is with a better one, thats how the market of ideas work.

Unfortunately we are so divided about what it is that we do stand for, and we are so hypocritical about how we want to be percieved when it comes to what we practice.

They knew that the attack on 9/11 would scare us, and politicians took advantage of that fear in a mad power grab. This power grab, some might argue, has weakened the constitution. So in effect the terrorists suceeded in destroying America, by causing us to sacrifice what it was that we did believe in as a nation, for the sake of (national) security.

Try learning about 4GW and then see if you see any evidence of it's successful application in your post. One of it's primary objectives is to create mistrust of the enemies leadership; another is to create division within the society of your enemy. Notice any of this in your post. Here's the reality - you're offically a successfully hit target of 4GW. You have been turned into a tool of the terrorists who's only hope of winning this war is to make us (the nations who are fighting terrorism) quit.

Actually, Lachean is exactly right. One way to fight mistrust is to be trustworthy. Your answer will feed the mistrust because it will be too easily shown for what it is, propaganda. And by being dishonest and too secret, Bush has already divided the populace. So, I suggest another way: Be honest, open, ethical and moral.
