47 Despicable Senate Republicans Vote To Deny Aid To Flint's Lead Poisoned Children
47 Despicable Senate Republicans Vote to Deny Aid to Flint’s Lead Poisoned Children

Senate Republicans forced a vote on an amendment today that would have denied federal aid to the poisoned children of Flint, Michigan. What is even more deplorable is that 47 Senate Republicans voted not help lead poisoned children….

“Senate Republicans forced a vote on an amendment today that would have denied federal aid to the poisoned children of Flint, Michigan. What is even more deplorable is that 47 Senate Republicans voted not help lead poisoned children………..

…………..The Coates Amendment to the Energy and Water Agencies Appropriations Act failed by a vote of 48-49. All Senate Democrats, with the exception of Sen. Claire McCaskill (MO) voted against the amendment. Five Republicans Sens. Lisa Murkowski (AK), Bill Cassidy (LA), Rob Portman (OH), Lamar Alexander (TN) and Dean Heller (NV) joined with Democrats in voting against the amendment, but 47 Senate Republicans voted not to provide federal aid for children that were poisoned by the decisions of Michigan’s Republican governor…………

The 47 Senate Republicans who voted for this amendment displayed a basic contempt for the American people that is proof of why Republicans should be voted out of the majority in November. It doesn’t get any lower than voting against helping poisoned children.

Democrats should keep the actions of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and the 46 Republicans who voted for this amendment in mind the next time one of these Republicans demands federal aid after a flood, fire, or hurricane. ………

Senate Republicans have prioritized the Koch’s over kids, which is why they should not be trusted with power in the United States Senate.”

And voted down because it makes Obama look bad...........outrageous and sinful IMHO

What does this have to do with spending and debt? Youre posting a moral judgment. And this is a state issue, not federal.

I'm a little lost here.

So was this a GOP Senate bill barring Obama from acting in providing federal to funding Flint?

If so, yes that would be pretty despicable.

Did I understand this correctly?

Edit: I'm fining this article confusing.

Re: 47 Despicable Senate Republicans Vote to Deny Aid to Flint’s Lead Poisoned Childr

The bill actually had nothing to do with Flint. Thats simply Democrat talking points. The original bill was the usual Energy and Water appropriation. The republicans wanted to amend it to stop the EPA from regulating "remote
and intermittent waters." And the courts have already suspended the EPAs ability to do so as an overreach.

What does this have to do with spending and debt? Youre posting a moral judgment. And this is a state issue, not federal.

So all 50 states in the US should operate completely independently and should never get help in emergencies?

Re: 47 Despicable Senate Republicans Vote to Deny Aid to Flint’s Lead Poisoned Childr

Regardless of what the bill is about, this is a state created problem that has nothing to do with the people of Nevada, Florida, or Alaska. If the people of Michigan don't like the behavior of their state representatives, then they should not elect those state representatives.

It's pretty tough to form an opinion an a piece of legislation unless we actually see the piece of legislation.

anyone know what mystery amendment this is?... or are we supposed to guess?

Lol !!!

I thought Imoyda was Debbie Wasserman Shultz for a little while. But no, he's just the resident village idiot.

He'll read something on Salon or Think Progress, ( he's a Conservative dont you know ) get super excited about it and then start a thread without thinking twice.

He's responsible for 60 % of the vacuous Partisan trash threads that make it into this Forum.

I think this omission in the article might have been intentional. It's a obtuse article, seeming highly partisan!

Got a link to the bill? There may be riders or such that would have made the bill inappropriate to pass. Which happens ALOT. So until I read the bill then I'm going to withhold judgement.

Well, I couldn't find the bill itself, I also could not find a reference to any "Coates Amendment". What I did find on the Energy and Water Agencies Appropriations Act though was nothing like your article stipulates. Even has the vote count wrong. It also shows that even Obama was against this particular Act as he was threatening to veto it.

The vote was the first big test of Senate leaders' effort to pass all 12 annual funding bills that detail how federal agencies must spend billions of taxpayer dollars in 2017. An amendment by Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., to bar funding for a 2014 Obama administration rule to protect streams and wetlands failed by a vote of 56-42. It required 60 votes to pass.
.
.
.
.
To pass the bills, senators must fend off "poison pill" amendments that undermine bipartisan support for the legislation. The Hoeven amendment defeated Thursday was strongly opposed by Democrats and the White House, which issued a veto threat Wednesday against the bill if the amendment was included.

I'll also note that from what I've been able to find Fenton had nothing to do with this Act.

Koch's over kids? More than just a little hyperbolic, don't ya think?

There is a procedure in place that allows for the US government, through FEMA, to pay for natural and manmade disasters. However, for the federal government to get involved, it has to be demonstrated that the response and recovery has exceeded the capabilities of the state and local government. The Flint water crisis didn't meet that threshold... so, the only alternative to get federal funding beyond what the EPA has already and will continue to spend (in case you thought that no federal money was being spent) was for Congress to have a special law that authorized disaster level spending on what has already been defined by the Federal Government as not meeting the threshold for a Presidential Declaration of Major Disaster.

Why should the kids of Flint get federal money when kids that have family members killed, their school demolished, and their homes leveled by a tornado not get federal money when they don't meet the same criteria that kept the Flint kids from getting the federal money in the first place?

That's what the problem is, not about kids, or the Koch's, or any thing else - it's about the law, the regulations, and the codified policies and not setting a precedence that would create such an outflow of money after every event similar in scale that the current standards would no longer be valid. Chaotic subjectivity applied in an arbitrary and capricious manner is already a problem with the federal government, we damn sure don't need to make it a codified and accepted norm.

Your first link is another partisan source.

Second link was regarding an amendment about promoting fuel-efficient vehicles, which passed. Only thing that article has to do with Flint and the Coates Amendment is the title of the article slightly referring to it.

Also, you were asked for the amendment itself so that we could actually look at it to gauge whether there was a reason to dump it or if it was truly a partisan debacle. Partisan articles will not tell us what the bill actually says. Since you were the one that brought all this up and are calling out republicans the onus is on you to provide proof. Proof that doesn't include partisan hackery mind you. Best way to do that is to provide the actual amendment.

Re: 47 Despicable Senate Republicans Vote to Deny Aid to Flint’s Lead Poisoned Childr

Anyone else notice that the OP article is complaining about an amendment that originates spending, in the Senate, when the House is the only chamber that can originate a bill that raises or spends money. The Senate can propose Amendments, but not original Legislation. The "amendment" in the OP had nothing to do with the attached bill, making the "amendment" a standalone bill within the parent bill meaning that the origination must occur in the House, not the Senate.

So procedurally, I'm not even sure if this could have occurred this way in the first place. It looks to me to be nothing but a strawman from the DSCC for use in their political attacks against certain Republican Senators running for re-election this year. In other words, just political BS, again.

I did find the Coates amendment, but Im not 100% sure how it figures into denying the money to Flint:
Congressional Record - 114th Congress - THOMAS (Library of Congress)
SA 3814. Mr. COATS (for himself, Mrs. FISCHER, Mr. FLAKE, and Mr. TOOMEY) submitted an amendment intended to be proposed to amendment SA 3801 proposed by Mr. ALEXANDER (for himself and Mrs. FEINSTEIN) to the bill H.R. 2028, making appropriations for energy and water development and related agencies for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2016, and for other purposes; which was ordered to lie on the table; as follows:

On page 30, line 9, strike the period at the end and insert the following: ``:

Provided, That none of the funds made available under this heading shall be used to administer, review, or approve any loan or loan application that was not submitted as of the date of enactment of this Act:

Provided further, that none of the funds available to the Secretary of Energy to provide any credit subsidy under subsection (d) of section 136 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (42 U.S.C. 17013) as of the date of enactment of this Act shall be obligated for new loan commitments under that subsection on or after October 1, 2020.''.

It seems to be a procedural vote being blown completely out of proportion. I could be wrong.
