30,000 line up for housing vouchers, some get rowdy  | ajc.com

Thirty thousand people showed up to receive Section 8 housing applications in East Point Wednesday, suffering through hours in the hot sun, angry flare-ups in the crowd and lots of frustration and confusion for a chance to receive a government-subsidized apartment.

The massive event sometimes descended into a chaotic mob scene filled with anger and impatience. Some 62 people needed medical attention and 20 of them were transported to a hospital, authorities said. A baby went into a seizure in the heat and was stabilized at a hospital. People were removed on stretchers and when a throng of people who had been waiting hours in a line were told to move to another line, people started pushing, shoving and cursing, witnesses said.

...

Channel 2 Action News reporter Mike Petchenik said fights were breaking out and police had to stop people who were storming the door.

How's that Hope and Change working out for you? Or is this all Bush's fault?

And to top it all off, they were just handing out the applications today. The same scene will take place tomorrow when people can start turning in the applications at 9 am. And all of this - to be placed on a waiting list. There are no available openings at this time.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Boy it makes you feel so sad how far we've devolved as a nation.

It's what this administration wants - everyone relying on government for a handout. They are well on their way to succeeding!

I think this is only the beginning. No one is doing anything to turn us around. They are just going full speed ahead with more failed policies.

Yeah, I don't think that this is exactly what the Obama administration wants. Seriously everytime someone says something like this I think they should go to the conspiracy theory forum.

What's your explanation for the things he does? He's sure not business friendly. Between the HC bill and higher taxes and cap and trade, no one will be able to stay in business. He called for a moretoreum not once, but 3 times to stop drilling. In the end that is going to cost 100,000 jobs, most of them high paying.
I think he does want everyone dependent and on the government dole.

And everytime someone says this ISN'T what Obama wants, It hink they should take a second look at him, and his policies.

A few thoughts. First, the term is moratorium.

Second, do you consider drilling additional deepwater wells, in light of what happened with deepwater horizon, to be a wise decision?

See, the problem with drilling new deepwater wells is that we're really not quite sure HOW TO TURN THEM OFF if something goes wrong. And, spilling hundreds of millions of gallons of oil along our shoreline really isn't good for business, either.

Lastly, Louisiana has been tracking jobs lost due to the moratorium. The job losses have been far less than 100k. In fact, they've been less than 500. Not not 5,000, or 50,000, but 500.

Get a grip on your girdle, myrtle. See what happens when you get your view of the world from biased sources?

Harry, that's rude.
The arial view of this mess was awful. This is what happens when people think the government is going to take care of them. This was just people trying to get an APPLICATION for public housing. I heard some of them will wait up to 10 yrs on a list. Maybe eventually minorities will move to the right side.
Can you imagine the coverage this would be getting if this happened under Bush's watch?
Obama's poll numbers are going to drop even more now. The scary part is, I don't think he cares one little bit about his poll # or what American citizans are going through under his watch. Has he even commented on this yet?

I guess you haven't thought about the terrible part of NOT HAVING A DAMN PLACE TO LIVE.

Yes I think we need to drill wherever we find oil. ANWR would be great start. We are in such deep water because crazy liberals drove them out there. However if we don't drill someone else will, and we need the jobs and the oil. I swear Obama hates people working in the private sector so much he's probably the one who sicked that official on the little girl with a lemonade stand.
The job losses are far from over. Is the Moratorium lifted yet?
Just heard that TX is sueing over the moratorium. Good for them. I hope more states follow.

that's what they were lining up for  i thought they enjoyed the process and would then go back to their mansions and ask jeeves to bring them a lemonade?

Stay on topic everyone. Oil has nothing to do with this story.

I absolutey have. I said it was awful didn't I? I said Harry was rude didn't I? I blamed Obama for their predicament didn't I?
Besides I don't think we were looking at 30000 homeless people, but people looking for more affordable housing. With the unemployment the way it is we'll be seeing thousands more in the same situation and maybe by then the 30000 will all be homeless. Ain't socialism great?

Drill, baby, drill, and damn the consequences. Brilliant. There's a lot of in-depth thinking in your post.

These are people who WOULD BE HOMELESS if they weren't being assisted by Section 8, because they can't afford to pay for any of the housing that is currently out there in the market. Some of them probably are homeless, living in short-term hotels, living out of cars, etc.

I don't know what you know about Section 8 (clearly, next to nothing) but many recipients are senior citizens.

Gosh. I'm sure happy we have you here to provide us with your deep philosophical insights.

Catz be gentile but the number of people who showed up account for approximately 75% of the city's population.
You can't tell me that many people can't afford a place to live.

Plus East Point is a **** hole.
