Since the invasion began, Ukrainian officials have urged foreign volunteers to help fight Russian forces.

Heeding to this demand, around 3,000 Americans have volunteered to fight Russian forces in Ukraine, a media report said, citing a representative of Kyiv's embassy in Washington.

...

This comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on March 3, the formation of an "international legion" of 16,000 foreign volunteers, who were being asked to "join the defense of Ukraine, Europe and the world", reported VOA News.

So many citizens of Canada have shown up in Ukraine to fight for the country’s new foreign legion, the organization has set up a separate Canadian battalion, says a Ukrainian government source.

The 550 would-be fighters that have arrived from Canada so far are part of a battalion based in Kyiv, said the representative of the International Legion for the Territorial Defence of Ukraine, who asked not to be identified for security reasons.

“International legion volunteers are usually kept together for logistics purposes as it is easier for communication, to avoid language barriers,” he said.

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian-Canadian activist helping in the recruitment of fighters in this country said hundreds more have volunteered to fight in Ukraine.

COMMENT:-

Since the US population is 8.726 times that of Canada's population, that means (according to the statisticians at The University of Numberology) that Canada should have sent around 26,180 volunteers if it wanted to match the US contribution in proportion to the two countries' population sizes - right?

On one hand I can respect their desire to help. On the other having US citizens killed will push the country into another war

Better to fight Putin over there than over here.

I heard something - not saying it's a fact - but these volunteer fighters MAY be viewed by law as mercenaries and subject to different rules of war.

I guarantee you that not one of our fabulous DP Gun Nuts are among that three thousand.

Hey TU: NOT. ONE.

I guess most know the risks. Good on them for having the stones. It's also likely something of a safety valve for society. Not a few might otherwise be the type to stay home and plot insurrection. This might help them get the Boogaloo out if their system...

Hey TU: NOT. ONE.
From what I have seen of the "reasoning" of those "fabulous DP Gun Nuts", if one of them had been assigned to my command, the first thing that I would have done is tell my 2i/c to find a way to get them transferred to someplace where they weren't such a danger to the real soldiers (and, preferably, to have it accomplished within 24 hours).

Is there a precedent for this?

This is feeling kind of world war-ish, if only on a miniature scale. It’s a variant of “What if we held a war and no one came?” except if it was “What if we held a world war and it was fought entirely in Ukraine?”

The only conflict that comes to mind is the Spanish Civil War.

I'm guess the dead and displaced people might disagree with you.

Better be careful the Russians may see this as escalation. Better ask our intelligence experts.

Such as M.Traitor.Greene and the House GOPootins supporting another Vlad ethnic cleansing, along with those of Xi.

This isn't a US vs Canada law conflict. We're talking international law and the Law of Wars. Think Geneva Conventions, et al.
It would be like russki repubs to lie about vlad obeying the geneva convention.

You missed the part about your ilk, the russki repubs, lying about vlad obeying the geneva convention. That goes for Xi also.
