Even the anti-Trump Speaker of the House had to clap for the President!
President Trump delivered a great speech and that is easy to see because of
the crazy posts criticizing his speech here at DP!

it was exactly as I expected, a fact-free, shallow, largely self-indulgent string of words. There was little policy, little conciliation and no vision. It could have been a campaign speech as it appealed to and was directed at his base.

His delivery, at least, was one of his more presidential moments. Most of the praise he gets, including on this thread, is that he stayed on script; he colored inside the lines and spoke directly to his base. Unfortunately, the SOTU is not suppose be a campaign speech; hence it was a fail.

He does get style points, however. But on that front, him doing something simple right for once is short-bus politics. Its a participation trophy.

As per above, your comments are correct if you grading on a curve.

There were "apple pie" platitudes that required applause, but Trump's word's are shallow. They usually mean nothing. Moreover, don't confuse being polite with endorsement. That may be confusing to those who follow a classless, uncouth leader.

I only occasionally catch these things. They are just political theater and don't really affect my positions on policy or my understanding of the politician's position.

Didn't watch last night because I was playing Fortnite with my daughter and her husband.

I rarely listen to these speechs, figuring its mostly theater and far too long. However, as my new girl-friend wanted to see it, I sat with her and her sister (who hates Trump) and endured it (Thankfully, in silence).

That said I thought Trump did a very good job, at times hitting it out of the ballpark, and given some of the subject matter and hyper-partisan conflicts of recent he delivered his message surprisingly well.

In particular, I found his comments on illegal immigration and his determination to secure the southern border, as well as his use of victims of illegals and the border patrol hero, to be tasteful and yet brutally effective - putting it to the glowering faces on the Democratic side whose sympathies for illegals prevented them from showing sympathy for a family's American tragedy.

The number of times Democrats sat on their hands on issues of decency (e.g. over illegal immigrant crime and infanticide) especially the "suffragette white coats" made his characterizations all the more effective.

My only criticism is its length (these things should be no more than an hour) and in his not giving an extended moral reminder of the evils of socialism - this was moment of necessary historical tutoring to a generation of mush brained (many newly elected) who weren't alive or at least old enough to remember the cold war against communist expansionism, or having seen the meaning behind its collapse.

Still, I liked his between the eyes head shot on socialism, poor old Bolshevik Bernie's face red with contained rage.

The only surprise to me is the rather generous reaction of some of those Trump critics in this forum, and my girl-friend's (who loves Trump) generous view the gender identity reactions of the white coats...

We will see the national reaction unfold today...

Reminded me of Nixon in 94 in the same speech in which he told the nation ... "one year of Watergate is enough" and pushed to stop the investigations. 190 days later - he resigned in disgrace. Maybe August will give us all an early Christmas present?

"94"? … "same speech" being the SOTU?

It was one of the better SOTU speeches that I have ever seen, if not the best.

My particular favorite points were when Trump started talking about the value of children, and overcoming cancer and st. judes and etc, even getting the Democrats to applaud along with him, THEN immediately dropping the hammer on them and attacking them for supporting the murder of unborn children. Their reactions were priceless. Also liked when he did the same type of build up regarding Venezuela's government situation and trying to enact a better regime and etc... He gets the Democrats to applaud along with him and then BAM he drops the "you guys want to bring that type of Socialism to America" hammer on them. I thoroughly enjoyed when the camera immediately panned over to a sweaty uncomfortable Bernie.

I do enjoy seeing a Republican who has the balls to attack the sick immorality of these Marxist types, and right to their faces to boot...

I wasn't all too behind Trump in the 2016 election, but I was NOT going to vote for the Witch, nor was I going to vote third party (in effect, voting for the Witch)... However, I must say that I am now MORE than eager to re-elect him to a 2nd term...

Nearly 3/4 of Americans liked it.

False. Nearly 3/4 of people who watched it liked it, but as you can see by this poll the lions share of respondents here didn't even watch it, and that includes most of the sane reasonable people on the forum.

I suppose it's hard for him to keep it short when he has so many accomplishments to touch base on, and so many positive goals that he wants to accomplish. ;) ;)

Unlike Obama, who's speeches were mostly just "me me I me I me me I I me"... That's what the Dem rebuttal speech basically was last night... That lady just talking about herself and her accomplishments and so on, while sprinkling in some basic Dem talking points about feminism and racism and the like...

I believe the last SOTU I watched was the one GWB gave after he took us into Iraq. I figured that unless Trump went way off script, there would be nothing of interest or consequence. Seems he stayed on script and his cult is beside themselves over the fact he pulled that off.

I watched it.

I did not hate it, I did not like it.

It ran too long and was not very interesting.

I thought Trump was a master of the moment.

What I liked is he talked in specifics and not the mealy mouth BS we have groaned through with past presidents.

I get that TDS'er's will have nothing nice to say, and I get that. But for people who care about the country it was a win for Trump and may also shame the democrats into cooperating with Trump on important areas.

I hear OAC was bummed that Trump say "That's a big negatory to socialism". She sat there in a pout.

Typical anti - Trump bigot.

Kill first, then rape? Because that’s just sick.

Kill first, rape second then duct tape you. These are animals.

No, I didn't watch.

I know the state of the Union. I live here.

Trump is just as ignorant and stupid as the people who fluff him daily.

“Master of the moment.” Give me a break.

Nope, it was bowling night. 669, not bad at all and we took 5 of 7. Beats watching a bunch of BS. I did watch a bit of the Islander game on my phone. Tough loss but another good showing.

669??? How many games?

It was on as I was doing something else, and I heard most of it. I about fell out of my seat laughing when he said that "you can't have peace and legislation if you have war and investigation". And it was like quiet after he sad it...no applause...just hung there. I texted a friend, we shared a laugh. So did I "hate" the SOTU? It was absurd and phony, and Trump got a laugh with that line. No one in their right mind takes him seriously.

He blathered on about wanting to help kids...as his administration has admitted they have no ****ing clue how to get the children they separated back with their parents, and said in some cases they don't feel they should even try. You know, the usual outrageously crazy nonsense that is so hypocritical that groans and eye rolling are all you can do.

The Democratic women cheering for themselves...that was another good one. Trump was like "no one thought you could do it" or some other B.S.,knowing full well they were stealing that scene from him.

The White male old guys on the right, they just watched on as usual...content with their tax cuts and conservative judges (thanks trump supporters, the rest is just damage control!)

It was also way too long and boring.

The parading people out there (that Regan introduced?) clappping..that's just not SOTU, they need to make an agreement that no one does this, it's a waste of our time.

669??? How many games?

The normal 3 for league night. I average around 212. One of my teammates bowled a 738, he is over 60 and had a cardiac catheterization last week. Another teammate who is 71 threw a 689 including the first 10 in the 2nd game for a 288. He throws about 11mph and everyone was rooting for him. He averages about 190. Fun night. Beats watching 5 deferment cadet fake bone spurs bloviate on national TV.
