The headline: 2 people have been arrested in the suspected road rage shooting death of a 6-year-old boy in California

The paragraph: "Aiden Leos was sitting in a booster seat as his mother drove him to kindergarten on California Highway when he was shot on May 21, CNN previously reported. He died at the hospital."

The comment: Once again, an innocent young life was snuffed out by a bullet. Once again, there are not sufficient American citizens willing to provide the critical mass of public opinion needed to significantly reduce the annual toll of gunshot deaths.

The deaths by gunshot of innocent children will continue. [Ref: https://gothamist.com/news/we-will-find-killer-10-year-old-boy-mayor-says]

Unless we can get rid of the 2nd and make like Australia, we're going to be stuck fighting over whether or not to even consider chipping at the edges of the problem.

Expanded universal background checks, far tighter control on private resale of weapons, red flag laws, closing de facto loopholes where someone can drive to a gun fair, buy a gun while skipping usual security checks, drive it back home where maybe they couldn't get it, etc. There are things we can do that will help. But at the end of the day we've got about 393 million legal guns in America (Small Arms Survey, 2018) and ~330 million people. Then we have all the illegal weapons and no effective way to get rid of them beyond: (1) seizing them arrest-by-arrest (lol), (2) seriously targeting trafficking.

But we'll still be reading these articles. We might reduce gun crime. We might take the guns out of some criminals hands. But we have to be honest about the fact that we'll be cutting down on, not solving, the problem(s).

Want to truly 'end gun violence'? You'd have to get rid of the right to bear arms, then act on having gotten rid of it. And sure, you've got lots of people saying they'll never give up their guns no matter what. Let's just say that when faced with a bunch of cops, they will almost certainly change their minds.

Of course, there are all sorts of other drivers of crime/violence (HELLO POVERTY!) that require an array of policies that would generally require tax dollars to be invested in various areas. And just about any time you advocate for that, the same people who tend to be most in opposition to gun laws start going on about welfare and "takers"....

If it's not the guns, what is it? Are Americans evil and people who immigrate become evil, too? Or maybe it's the guns. Most guns per capita, most gun violence per capita. The first world country with third world problems.

---------
At the end of the day, people love their guns too damn much to ever agree to anything that will make a serious dent (at least...until it happens to them or their own), and in any event they don't want to be bothered to pay tax dollars that could conceivably solve a problem affecting someone else. People find it easier to say "look at how evil that criminal is"....

So yes, the deaths of innocents will continue apace, thoughts n' prayers notwithstanding.

Here is the 10yo victim.

He was just riding in a car...

That might be another crime victim but that little boy is not Aiden Leos.
This is Aiden Leos (and his mom):

"It's believed the shooting may have stemmed over a driveway dispute"

Some of you have two stories mixed up.
Aiden Leos was riding in the back of his mom's car when another driver cut her off on the freeway, and then either the driver or passenger opened fire on Ms. Leos' car, and the bullet struck Aiden in the abdomen, causing him to bleed out in a matter of minutes.

Good. I hope they pay the ultimate price.

Is there a link? Your link is to another tragic shooting of a child.

Glad those two were caught. Now it is up to the state of California, will they seek out a tough sentence resulting in theses assbags spending many years if not the rest of their life in jail. Or will California charge them heavy for the media PR then plea down once the cameras are gone resulting in less than a decade between them served for this kids murder

Why is America so violent? What makes your nuts more abundant than other countries nuts? Forget the fact your nuts have such easy access to guns......why are there so many so predisposed to violence? There is something really, really wrong.

As I often write, we need to figure out how/why we are creating so many of these POS loser males. That cannot manage their own feelings, that cant control themselves. That instead choose to blame everyone else for their problems, their lost jobs, opportunities, women, etc. They cant handle slights of any kind, and are just bitter, jealous, angry, etc and apparently dont hold themselves accountable for any of their own failures. They seem to just stew in their own outrage and imagined injustices...until they erupt and take it out on others.

And that's it. ^^^
Seems like we are indeed "creating POS loser males" by the train load these days.
What could it be?
Could it be a case of loser role models, maybe?

Many areas of the early USA were simply dumping grounds for criminals and the criminally insane that European countries wanted to get rid of. Australia has a similar heritage. Those gene trees just keep on branching.

So why doesn't Australia have anywhere near the level of violence?

What a tragedy.

We should make anger management classes mandatory for all gun owners.

"was driving him to kindergarten."

OMG

.

The Paris terrorist shootings at multiple venues and the Hebdo shootings illustrate a central problem.

We can have airtight gun laws but unless we can eliminate the production and distribution of guns from literally EVERY place on earth there will always be shootings.

And I wouldn’t wish the wrath of an entire region if people started seizing guns or instituting strict background checks in the Middle East or Central or South America. The latter is so littered with weapons and murder that I don’t think even the military can control it. These places, like the US, are firmly grounded in gun culture.

And in the US, stories like this are of course tragic but one must remember that most gun deaths are the result of suicide and most of the remainder are criminals killing each other.

Hi, Callen!

You are correct in identifying we, the people of the United States of America as a more violent society than many, if not most, modern democracies. The reasons are manifold, and not easily solved.

Unfortunately, while in medicine we now try to reduce pain and make the patient more comfortable during recovery, we've not yet gotten around to the idea of reducing the deaths caused by our violence while we putter about in search of a solution. The easy access, almost without criminal penalty, to guns results in many unfortunate preventable deaths each year.

We've a long way to go, and our present political situation doesn't make the effort to improve things very easy.

Something is wrong and the reluctance of some to admit it is a huge part of the problem. A propensity to act out violently and the easy access to weapons is a dangerous mix...and it shows. We have violent actors here too, as do most countries, but the frequency is way out of whack with other countries. Mass murders especially. Something is wrong and the reluctance to face it is equally as wrong.

There aren't sufficient Americans to create a critical mass where the general population finds their fellow human beings important enough NOT to kill them or otherwise treat them as a mere inconvenience in the self-serving, self-important, judgemental, hate filled life so many choose to live.

The issue isn't guns. The issue is that some asshole decided "his" parking spot was more important than the lives of the people living in the house he shot into.

Unbelievable. Awful. Ban these ar 15s.

While I somewhat agree with you here, it may be important to note that this was a man and a woman and I think the woman was driving (if I remember correctly from the earlier story).

I dont see how it changes what I wrote. Can you be more specific?

Much smaller population

OK...lets talk percentage of mass murders occurrences to population. Not sure why you want to deny the obvious. I think denial is part of the problem.
