2 OP-eds showing the Israeli debate around settlments

Lapid is not a leftist (or center-left), he's a center-right.

and Israel Shahak for the win!

oops, he's dead. Never mind.

I hear that calling his name three times while denying the holocaust may bring him back from the grave.

Israel Shahak, Israel Shahak, Israel Sha-...

Could you break down these two articles for those of us who do not follow and/or do not understand the nuanced complexities of internal Israeli politics and how it pertains to the settlements?

Segal blames the leftist in the Palestinian insistment on freezing the development in settlments, he says this demand never came in earlier talks and that the campaign leftist groups such as "Peace Now" are leading against the settlments made the Palestinians "adopt" this ideal.
Lapid on the other hand says the settlers, being 5% of the population are making too much background noise and are forcing their ideology upon the rest of the Israeli society, he says its time for them to stand down and that blaming everything on leftists doesn't stand together with reality as the Israeli left is on its death bed these days, the goverment which is leading this line is a right wing and those who support it are the majority of the Israelies.

So you're saying that originally the Palestinians didn't care at all about stopping the settlement buildings until the Israeli Left started making a call to stop it, then? So why would the Israeli Left be against the building of settlements?

So most of the settlers are Rightist? And they receive support from the Right? But despite being a small part of the Israeli population, the settlers' agenda make up a disproportionate part of Israeli policy regarding peace with the Palestinian people. Therefore, they should STFU for the betterment of the majority of the Israeli people. Did I get that right?

No, thats not what I'm saying, thats what Segal is saying, you'd have to address this question to him or someone that supports this idea...

yes

Actually they received support from all of the Israeli goverments from all of the political spectrum. This is what Lapid is saying, we set down and let you pursue your ideals, we were protecting you and funding you, now its time for you to stand down.

When your goverment is hanging on a thread even a party with 3 mandates can blackmail you. Do you think Bibi wouldn't have continue the freeze if he was sure he had it wouldn't cause his goverment to fall? Bibi is a prime minister with no real agenda, his agenda is to address the topics which are fashionable in the media and to survive another day on his seat. Lapid claims that the majority of the Israelies would like to see peace talks continue, and that by marking everyone who would like to see peace talks continue as "leftist" the settlers are shooting their own foot by alienating themselves from the Israeli society

Okay. Thank you for clearing that up. I know very little about the details of internal Israeli politics, but thank you for explaining those things for me.
