Boston outraged at promo that sparked panic
Officials vow to prosecute those responsible for costly terror scare

BOSTON - Boston officials, livid about a publicity campaign that had disrupted the city by stirring fears of terrorism, vowed to prosecute those responsible and seek restitution for the $500,000 cost of the response.

Officials found a slew of blinking electronic signs adorning bridges and other high-profile spots across the city Wednesday, prompting the closing of a highway and part of the Charles River and the deployment of bomb squads.

It's pretty simple, Boston authorities are total frickin' idiots. Period. Now they are just making themselves out to be even bigger morons with all this crap the mayor and the rest of those tards are spouting:

“It is outrageous, in a post 9/11 world, that a company would use this type of marketing scheme,” Mayor Thomas Menino said. “I am prepared to take any and all legal action against Turner Broadcasting and its affiliates for any and all expenses incurred.”

There were 38 of those things hanging around the city for three weeks:

Berdovsky, an artist, told The Boston Globe he was hired by Interference and said he was “kind of freaked out” by the furor.

“I find it kind of ridiculous that they’re making these statements on TV that we must not be safe from terrorism, because they were up there for three weeks and no one noticed. It’s pretty commonsensical to look at them and say this is a piece of art and installation,” he said.

Like I said, the Boston authorities are total idiots. End of story.

Re: Boston authorities are total frickin' idiots

I don't understand what is wrong with these people. It was clearly not a bomb hoax when you get the facts, some people initially perceived it as one. But that doesn't seem to make a difference to their thought process, all their comments are based on the assumption it was a bomb hoax. They are too stupid for word.

Re: Boston authorities are total frickin' idiots

Damn!! Bush told us that the smoking gun of terrorism in the US would come in the form of a mushroom cloud. So what do the terrorists do? They cross up homeland security, and send cartoon characters to do their dirty work. What next? Mickey Mouse destroying America? Wait!!! Oh no!!!!! He already is. He took over ABC and now Americans face a daily barrage of pablum puke, which is destroying the minds of all who watch it. Damn those terrorists!!

Re: Boston authorities are total frickin' idiots

Had any of these things actually been something threatening, you all would be the first to use it as an axample of how the Administration has failed to protect us.

My thoughts EXACTLY!! I lost 6 loved ones on 9/11 so anything that could even remotely cause the authorities to think they were bombs is wrong.

That they ended up not being bombs does not mitigate what they did. It was reasonable to assume, looking at them from a distance, that they could be bombs. They had to be treated as as such. Only an idiot would not think this would be the result of their prank. They were placed at locations someone planting a bomb would place them. They created a public nusence and distrupted the lives of thousands. And they two jerks that actually did it think it is funny, they show no remorse for what they did and should have the book thrown at them including restitution for the stupid little prank they pulled, the people that came up with the idea and approved it should all be fired.

This hoax is an example of the failure our national security has proven itself to be. It has shown that the current measures taken by the Bush administration and our Homeland Security are simply not working. Had these been real bombs people in Boston would have been very screwed. These guys managed to place these objects around that particular for 3 weeks before they were caught. Think about it really slowly. A few guys are placing bomb looking objects around a city for 3 entire weeks before they are stopped. It doesn't matter if they were real of not. They managed to show the weaknesses the current anti-terrorism measures have.

So do you support he Patriot Act and the NSA foreign signals intercepts which can and have stopped such plots?

Arent the patriot act and the nsa programs the measures that were taken to prevent another terrorist attack? You'll have to agree that they've been proven to be failures because of this particular incident.

Re: Boston authorities are total frickin' idiots

Arent the patriot act and the nsa programs ....................

You know exactly what they are, the question was do you support them. Their purpose is to prevent terrorist from attacking us, not letting them get to the point of planting bombs in the first place. And I guess what this really proves is that the government is NOT using the PA or the NSA to monitor our own innocent citizens within our borders or else THEY WOULD HAVE KNOWN.

So what are you saying they should have been illegally tapping TBS and should have picked up on their plot?

We're stopping people who don't live here from coming here and we seem to be doing a good job of it so do you support the two things I cited?

Cartoon Terrorism?

BOSTON - In nine cities across the country, blinking electronic signs displaying a profane, boxy-looking cartoon character caused barely a stir.

But in Boston, the signs — some with protruding wires — sent a wave of panic across the city, bringing out bomb squads and prompting officials to shut down highways, bridges and part of the Charles River.

Something that may have been amusing in other cities was not funny to authorities here, the city that served as the base for the hijackers who carried out the Sept. 11 attacks. Officials defended their reaction Thursday even as two men charged in the case, and some residents, mocked the response as overblown.

Young Bostonians familiar with the unconventional marketing tactics used by many companies tended to see the city’s reaction as unmitigated hysteria.

Official defends reaction
“Just a little over a mile away from the placement of the first device, a group of terrorists boarded airplanes and launched an attack on New York City,” police Commissioner Edward Davis said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Davis said that as calls were coming in about the electronic signs in rapid succession Wednesday afternoon, police also received reports of two devices that resembled pipe bombs and had a confirmed report of a man walking down the hallways of New England Medical Center making a rambling speech about “God getting us today” and “This would be a sorry day.”

Two men who authorities say were paid to place the devices around the city pleaded not guilty Thursday to placing a hoax device and disorderly conduct. Peter Berdovsky, 27, and Sean Stevens, 28, were released on $2,500 cash bond — apparently amused by the situation, even though they face up to five years in prison.

“We need some time to really sort things out and, you know, figure out our response to this situation in other ways than talking about hair,” Berdovsky said.

See the thing is if this had been a real attack Boston would be facing a crisis right now and PA and NSA program would have proven to be worthless.

So what are you saying they should have been illegally tapping TBS and should have picked up on their plot?

See the thing is the patriot act is already worthless considering we've had over 20 years of illegal immigration. For all we know the terrorist is already here.

We're stopping people who don't live here from coming here and we seem to be doing a good job of it so do you support the two things I cited?

I dont really know if I support the patriot act. There's alot of tricky wording in it that I haven't had time to read yet. The NSA program I'm completely for it. I've got nothing to hide so it doesn't both me. The Patriot act I'd have to get back to you on.

No, the thing is to stop long before they get to the point of execution while still protecting the privacy of innocent citizens, and obviously these innocent citizens weren't being spied on which should make you happy. And since no attacks have occoured by terrorist, you should also be happy.

So do you support the Patriot Act and the NSA signals intercepts?

Why can't you just answer the question?

I dont really know if I support the patriot act.

So you want to criticize the administration over this yet you haven't even bother to educate yourself about what we do do and why we do it that way.

Tell me how you think the FBI should have caught the people who did this stunt. Why did they miss for this to have happened? How were they remiss in their duties?

Oh no you're very confused. I'm all for the violation of privacy if it means the safety of my family and that of millions of others is ensured. I dont have anything to hide if somebody else does thats too bad for them. However this goverment has failed miserably at convincing me that the measures they have taken are anything more then theatrics of the political world.

So you want to criticize the administration over this yet you haven't even bother to educate yourself about what we do do and why we do it that way.

Are you by any means implying that the Patriot Act is just another piece of paper one can read through and understand all of it's implications immediately? That no research has to be done before one can make a complete judgement on a 340 page legal document? Not even you would sugest this I hope.

Tell me how you think the FBI should have caught the people who did this stunt. Why did they miss for this to have happened? How were they remiss in their duties?

I dont understand. For 3 weeks these guys managed to do what they were doing. 3 weeks. Not 3 minutes. Not 3 hours. Not 3 days. 3 Weeks. Where was the FBI all this time? Isn't their job to look into suspicious situations such as this one?

Re: Cartoon Terrorism?

It is patently obvious that the youth of Boston with their love of all things new, the latest fashions and their lives before them would think nothing of this affair.
Those who are, shall we say, more mature, take a very dim view of what occured.

Re: Cartoon Terrorism?

Well be thankful is wasn’t a pic of Mohammad.
A dozen people would have been killed already....

Re: Cartoon Terrorism?

I agree. Gonzo marketing at its worst, and the really sad thing about it is that after this one has received so much noteriety (and therefore success) there are sure to be copycats.

The boy who cried wolf comes to mind. When advertising gimics are created to mimic potential terrorist actions, what is going to happen in a real terrorist situation?

"Oh, what acute adverti..." KABLOOM.

Re: Boston authorities are total frickin' idiots

Oh no you're very confused.

Not at all.

However this goverment has failed miserably at convincing me that the measures they have taken are anything more then theatrics of the political world.

What would convince you?

Are you by any means implying that the Patriot Act is just another piece of paper one can read through and understand all of it's implications immediately?

Well if you read you probably can but it has also been widely discussed and analysised for years.

That no research has to be done before one can make a complete judgement on a 340 page legal document? Not even you would sugest this I hope.

OK you simply want to dodge the question.

Where was the FBI all this time?

Probably watching out for real terrorist.

Isn't their job to look into suspicious situations such as this one?

When they are reported.

Damn this story has been blown up way too big. Maybe the Boston authorities could have checked some of the signs before freaking the ***** out. "OH MY GOD, IT'S THE TERRORISTS." What a bunch of cry babies, "They put that sign less than a mile from the airport! How dare they." If this is how people respond to guerilla marketing, I guess were all just a bunch of ******s. I'm gonna go hide under my bed now. :2wave:

I find it sorta odd that no one has even made mention of the two whacko morons that are being held.

The way they conducted themselves at the press conference was absolutely ridiculous and just shows how some people do not respect authority or have respect for other people.

On a personal note......Now I'm not a violent woman BUT had I been at that press conference, someone would have had to restrain me, because I would have wrapped those dreadful gross dredlocks around that morons neck. :rofl He wanted to talk about hair.......I'd have made his wish come true.

They didn't care whatsoever about anyone they just might have terrorized. No remorse. I am quite sure some liberal judge sitting on the bench in Boston will give these two sickos a pat on the back and send them on their way. And in a year or so they will both have their own reality show.

And their lawyer....... a moron too.

Now Boston might have overreacted who knows.....but can we be to careful?

They all made me sick to my stomach.

Now how does this particular incident prove the patriot act & nsa programs as failures? If anything it proves the opposite. They detected nothing about this because it wasn't a terrorist operation.
