Greece has issued a silver commemorative €2 coin for the anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae, which took place on August 9, 480 BC.

The Battle of Thermopylae is one of the most important and well-known battles in world history. The strategy and tactics of the fight are still taught in a number of military schools around the world. The Greeks, heavily outnumbered, lost on the field and the victorious Persians advanced through Greece to Salamis.

Throughout Europe and wherever the history of world civilizations is taught, schoolchildren all know the glorious story of the 300 Spartans. We own it as our own and modern Greek scholars must have a pride that shines as bright as the new €2 coin.

Although outnumbered 300 to 300,000 the courage and skill of the Spartans were an inspiration. The spirit of resistance was what mattered and, in the end, the Greeks ultimately beat the Persians at Salamis.
