Read it a dozen years ago, or so. It's first person from a young black guy, that has a challenged younger brother, that rides a train to somewhere for a job. It's highly acclaimed, but google won't get me there. Old white dude wrote it. Hep, me please?

Sorry, all I can come up with is "One Hundred Dollar Misunderstanding" which is supposedly written first person from the view of a fourteen year old black prostitute, except it too was written by a white dude, Robert Gover, who became a bestselling author when he wasn't being arrested alongside Jim Morrison of The Doors.

Can't speak to your guy, but if you're looking for the real deal - there's always Iceberg Slim!

There's Driving Miss Daisy although I don't know if there was a book before the movie. Plus there wasn't much of a part for a dog in it.
