What the heck is going on in our country? 1st and 2nd grade boys are sexually assaulting a female 2nd grader? Where do they learn this kind of disgusting behavior? I am appalled, and I hope the kids and the parents learn a heavy lesson from this. It happened at recess, and the teachers who were supposed to be supervising recess were fired. Good for the superintendent. I'd fire their butts too. Apparently, these kids were huddled around the girl, holding her down and trying to poke her inappropriately. That breaks my heart. Can you imagine how horrifying it was for that young girl?

The article from where I took the title of this thread does not provide enough detail as to what happened, and the title of the article that I am posting doesn't explain what the issue is about.

Teachers are disciplined over attack on girl, 8
By Michael Beder and Steve Giegerich
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
05/09/2006

One Columbia Elementary School teacher was fired and another suspended with pay for a lack of attentiveness that St. Louis schools Superintendent Creg Williams said led to a possible sexual assault on a school playground Friday.

Ten first- and second-grade boys thought to be responsible for the attack on an 8-year-old girl have been suspended for the rest of the school year, district officials said. Two others received in-school suspensions for five days each.

The two boys who got the lesser punishment kissed the girl, a district official said. Other boys held her down. Authorities were trying to determine the extent of the sexual contact. The victim's great-aunt said that based on her conversations with the girl and with her own son, who was at the school that day, she believed the boys were trying to poke their fingers into her and that the girl was fighting to keep her underpants on. . . .

You know Aps, I've been asking that same question since Columbine & Jonesboro, Arkansas(which is my home state). I know that I was socially inept and picked on mercilessly in High School and not ONCE did I ever think about bringing a gun to school and blowing people away...

I couldn't imagine 7 & 8 year olds knowing what they were doing, but my guess, somehow in their upbringing, they were introduced to all of this.

I place the blame on parents. When I was younger, I kept myself in line because I didn't want to hear those words... "Just wait until your father gets home"... because I knew when he did... I would be in serious trouble. Nowadays, they aren't being taught there are negative consequences to negative actions...

If you have nothing substantive to say about the article, get out of here. What's funny is that I was spanked like no one's business, and my father is and has always been a die-hard liberal.

hows this for a substantive contribution

the parents of the boys should lose custody of these little animals
the parents of the boys should be jailed for neglecting their childs upbringing

and the boys should be given a cattle prod up the rectum to see how they like being violated

and by the way, there are plenty of good liberals out there to balance out the good conservatives

but it is the liberals, and their feel good policies that have outlawed corporal punishment.
I got in trouble as a kid, but i did not go bad, because i feared my fathers punishment, which would be swift and severe
nowadays, most parents are trying to be their kids best friend, instead of their mentor, disciplinor (is that even a word?), confidant, etc....
these lil buggers obviously had no discipline in the home
and that is the parents fault

Wait I thought it was the liberals fault?

Is it the parents or the liberals?
Or the liberal parents?

or was it poor judgement, lack of instruction on inappropriate behavior, and group mentality?

This...

Well that is more like it! My sister is a conservative, and she tries to be her kids' best friend. I suspect her son will land in jail during his lifetime. When he was in the 4th grade, he forged his teacher's signature. His punishment was that, while he was allowed to go trick-or-treating, he wasn't allowed to eat the candy. WTF? Thank goodness my parents were tough.

DeeJay, I honestly don't see how you can say this is a "liberal" issue. For some parents, they were physically abused or felt that their punishments growing up bordered on physical abuse and they don't want to do that to their kids. I think with my sister, she looks for acceptance from everyone, and doesn't want her kids to be disappointed with her. That kind of personality is nonpartisan.

this may be a cliched idea but I think kids today have more access to violent material : movies, games, internet, etc.. It just seems like violence is more accepted and as was stated parents today don't discipline like they should. Up until I was in about 2 or 3rd grade even the teachers were allowed to hit a kid if they got out of line and I'll tell you no one even thought of it. Sure we had violence back then but I don't think anything like now. It seems like it's almost 'cool' to do something outragously bad.

please don't tell me you actually buy into "the movie/music/tv/video game made me do it" theory.... because a child is just that.. a child... and if mom and dad aren't laying down the law and sticking to it... THIS is what we get. Mom and Dad have control of EVERYTHING in their house.. and if they choose not to exercise that control.... there ya go.

I don't think music has anything to do to it but I have seen studies if kids who play violent video games are more likely to commit violent crimes. I never beleived any of that **** before but yeah if parents watched what their kids were doing they wouldn't be out there doing that kind off stuff. But where do you think these kids learned about raping a girl or holding her down and assaulting her? From their parents? They saw something like that somewhere and were trying to act it out.

But in instances like this.... it has been tried to make parent's responsible... and no one will subcribe to that, either. So what's the answer? We let idiots be parents, their kids subsequently go to school and act out what they've seen, and we prosecute babies?

I think kids should be punished to some extent for egregious behavior like this. Kids being removed from school isn't a punishment. Hey, they don't have to go to class. The parents should unquestionably be punished. There is no disincentive if there's no punishment involved.

As an aside, I had a kid in my neighborhood reeking havoc. He messed with me, I banned him from the property, and he trespassed. I filed a complaint. They told me at the juvenile court that "he's in our system." So clearly this kid has issues, and guess what, nothing seems to stop him. I am forcing his lazy mom to go into court next week because I filed a complaint.

No one want to take responsibility for anything anymore. Some people are just born bad, no one can deny that. I don't know the answer how to help kids whose parents have messed up somewhere but it would help if there was more discipline in school.

thats a mental disorder, or perhaps only a personality Flaw, at the least
she is weak, and a follower and a seeker of approval
her political stance means nothing because it is probably based on just that, NOTHING

kids can be cruel sometimes. usually, its something that the kid will do regularly, but sometimes a kid who has never hurt anyone will do something like that. if its a one time occurance the parents arent necessarily to blame. without knowing the kids or their parents, there's no way to judge.

eitherway, I think the principal handled the situation well, and I think those kids need a good whooping when they get home. the kids that get it will probably never do anything like this again, and the kids that dont have probably done stuff like this before.

I know the kids identitie's are protected but I have to wonder. When you folks visualize what these 12 boys might look like, in your minds eye, how would you describe them?

Height
Weight
Eye color
Hair
Complexion
Dress

This is sort of an experiment. Humor me.

i do not see those parameters having any bearing on the situation
perhaps level of income/poverty, but not any of the above
except maybe Dress (i.e. gang or pimp-wear)

Don't know really.. I've had family members that weren't allowed to play certain video games at home but still committed violent crimes. I played every game I could and have no criminal record. Games are very different form real life.
