A century after World War I ended, it's possible to hear just how suddenly the guns fell silent. The thought-provoking soundscape was produced from "sound ranging" film that was made to locate enemy artillery positions.

The sound of peace?

Rest in peace, Henry Gunther......the last American soldier to die in WW 1.....at 10:59 AM the day the ceasefire went into effect.

One minute.

Did you hear the birds at the very end of the recording? Very symbolic! Thanks for posting that, Bum!

Yes, you can hear the birds very clearly.....hard to believe that 11,000 died on that very same day on both sides.

Also, it's interesting that the recording was multi-track (as seen in the picture) which produced a stereo effect--long before stereo recordings were produced and sold (I think).
