Sounds really stupid. The truth is most of the field of psychology is based off of either fraud or left-wing politics. So these deputies should just move somewhere else out of the state of California and get hired elsewhere. There is really no psychological testing that can determine whether or not you are suited for employment as a police officer. This requirement is basically a makework program for left-wing psychology graduates. And a way of politically manipulating police forces. You don’t have to do anything wrong or be diagnosed with any particular disorder to fail these psychological exams.

It starts with a multiple choice question battery similar to MMPI (do you like to do new things, strong agree neutral, disagree etc) then includes a sit down interview with a psychologist.

It’s important to note however they are NOT searching for evidence you’re mentally ill. They are instead operating under the theory that they have done these tests on hires in the past and they then look at answers of officers who got into trouble and those who’ve “succeeded” in the career and are measuring your personality compared to those people using a five factor (or OCEAN-openness to experience, concieniousness, Extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism) personality model. Now they also want to test applicants for “bias” which I don’t know how you psychologically test for except by asking the applicant “do you have bias against x and y group” which of course no one is going to say yes to.

The problem of course is that if you ask the same questions then people will learn what the examiner wants to hear, so the test is always changing and it’s hard to find the questions used online. There is however a cottage industry of consultants and advisors who will teach you how to pass it for a few hundred dollars. Really though this is nonsense, because you can score completely differently on personality modeling tests and it’s very hard to replicate.
