1 San Diego Police Officer Shot, Killed in Line of Duty, Second Seriously Wounded | NBC 7 San Diego

One San Diego police officer has died and one remains in surgery after a late-night shooting just south of downtown San Diego. One suspect is in custody and authorities continue to search for other possible suspects, police said.
At a press conference early Friday morning, San Diego Police Department Chief Shelley Zimmerman said the officers were conducting a traffic stop shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday in San Diego's Southcrest neighborhood when the shooting happened.

Not much to go on. Second officer out of surgery, should be ok.

How does the latter jump to conclusions?

It assumes, that at the time of the OP posting, that the police were not engaged in criminal activity and somebody stood their ground. I don't know if new information has come out since then.
All we knew, at the time, was that an officer was killed and another wounded.

We can no longer assume that a person wearing a law enforcement badge is not a criminal.
They have been known to lie on reports, plant evidence, perform illegal searches and seizures, invent reasons to arrest you. In Chicago, they even had a secret prison. A. Secret. Prison.
They are costing tax payers millions of dollars per year in settlements for their behaviour.

Oh, so YOU were jumping to conclusions. Gotcha!

Normal line of reasoning in a civilized western society is to assume that law enforcement is serving and protecting until otherwise shown. Stop watching Training Day so much.

That "normal line of reasoning", as RW pointed out so well, is no longer valid. Why? Because there are so damn many, too many, photographed and videoed encounters of police NOT serving and protecting, but rather blatantly murdering people and otherwise breaking the laws of civilized society, western or otherwise.

I'm certainly not happy about that fact, and I doubt she is either, but it is a most unpleasant fact.
