A standing ovation greeted Volodymyr Zelenskyy as he took the stage Saturday at the Munich Security Council, even as his embattled country braced for a potentially imminent Russian invasion. But the Ukrainian president had come not for plaudits but with demands that NATO and the European Union do more to help. In a fiery speech and interview, Zelenskyy called for immediate sanctions against Moscow, criticizing the Biden administration for merely threatening to implement the measures should Russia invade. “You are telling me that the war will start 100% in the next days?,” he said, citing U.S. President Joe Biden’s warning on Friday. “Then what are you waiting for?” Zelenskyy thanked allies for the military and financial contributions to Ukraine and pleaded for more—and added that he shouldn’t have to plead. “We equally appreciate the support but everyone needs to understand that this is not some kind of donation Ukraine should be…begging for,” he said. “This is your contribution to the European and international security for which Ukraine has been serving as a shield for eight years now.”

Beyond material support, the Ukrainian president asked both NATO and the European Union for straight answers about when ihis country might join as a member. He said neither body has been honest with his country, despite years of discussion and incremental steps. “Why are we avoiding this question?” he demanded of the EU, speaking through an interpreter. “Doesn't Ukraine deserve to have direct and frank answers?” Zelenskyy asked the same of NATO. “Be honest about it. Open doors are good, but we need open answers,” he said. The Biden administration had urged Zelenskyy to skip the summit, citing concerns. In Munich, he assured the audience that he would be back in Kiev in time for dinner.

Good for Zelenskyy. Western Europe is only 72 hours away from having the Russian military on thier eastern borders.

Those damaging economic measures against Russia should have started to give Putin a taste of how serious the US and NATO really are. As one Ukrainian said, in so many words: "Before economic sanctions against Russia have any effect, they will have us. It will be too late. The sanctions should have already started."

Is that such a bad thing? Is what is good for Russia not also good for Europe? Europe and the US have repeatedly told Russia they fail to understand its objections to Nato on its borders? Why should Europe object to Russia on its borders?

These proposed sanctions are illegal under international law. They would of course be laughably stupid when applied as punishment for something that hasn't happened, lacking even a moral justification.

But the non western world would chalk it up to yet another example of western hypocrisy, aggression, and how they are not to be trusted.

Wait, wasn't he just a few days ago saying "the west" was antagonizing Putin?

Yea. He had a heated chat with Biden. Asking Biden to cool it down

Most Russians live in that part of Russia that is in Europe. Russian is by far the most populous country in Europe. The USSR didn't leave after invading E. Europe to defeat WW2 Germany until 1989 when the Soviet Union began collapsing until final collapse in 1991. Russia invaded the Crimean Peninsula of Ukraine in 2014. Now Russia is clearly threatening to invade Ukraine, a former member of the Soviet Union, and a Russian territory, by force, since the late 18th century. Ever since Russia has been Russia, and the Soviet Union, it has only expanded its borders and given up, with great resistance, only what it has taken. If anybody's got good reason for objection to what Russia is doing, it's the rest of Europe.

Ukraine was never a Russian vassal by choice.

The dissolution of the Soviet Union was too hastily done. Pappa Bear and his estranged wives should have gone to a proper Divorce Court where matters could have been adjudicated and common properties apportioned. Yeltsin was the worst bear that Russia ever produced. He should have made sure that his estranged wives didn't bolt with property that rightfully belongs to Russia.

For far too long Ukraine has had in her custody property that rightfully belongs to Russia. There is new Sheriff in Moscow. You could also call him the repo man from hell. He is fixing to repossess a significant chunk of real estate in east Ukraine

What "...property that rightfully belongs to Russia.", exactly, are you speaking of? What makes that property their right to possess?
