I understand the sentiment. Good leaders of law enforcers want the public and their officers safe at the end of the day. NOT the way to address that issue though.
What I would have said if I were the Sheriff:
“My Officers are charged with the protection of the public. This includes themselves. We acknowledge and appreciate that we live in a free nation were the right to peaceful protest is Constitutionally guaranteed. However the unlawful destruction of property or threat to life and limb will not be tolerated. Other protesters, the civilian population and my officers will be protected from unlawful acts.
If you break the law you will be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of that law. If you threaten life and limb you place your life and limb at risk in the lawful response to your threatening behavior.
We say this not to intimidate, but to advise all concerned so that actions are considered in an aware state of the consequences involved in making them.
We wish all well and a safe return to ordinary business when this is completed.”
