The news of freedom came late to more than 250,000 enslaved black people in Texas.

On June 19, 1865 — more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the slaves in Confederate states — Maj. General Gordon Granger stood at the Headquarters District of Texas in Galveston and read “General Order No. 3”:

“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

Black people who heard the news erupted in celebration.

“They spent that night singing and shouting,” remembered Pierce Harper, a formerly enslaved woman, in 1937, according to “Slave Narratives” interviews collected by the Works Progress Administration. “They weren’t slaves no more.”

Ever since, African Americans across the country have marked that day of liberation with a holiday known as Juneteenth. President Trump announced Wednesday that he plans to resume holding his political rallies — in Tulsa on June 19, the celebratory day of Juneteeth. Yet Tulsa is the site of one of the worst episodes of racial violence in U.S. history: the 1921 race massacre.

'They was killing black people'

The announcement that Trump would hold a political rally on Juneteenth in a city — where as many as 300 black people were killed by mobs of white people — shocked some historians.

“It’s almost blasphemous to the people of Tulsa and insulting to the notion of freedom for our people, which is what Juneteenth symbolizes,” said CeLillianne Green, a historian, poet, lawyer and author of the book “A Bridge: The Poetic Primer on African and African American Experiences.”

“I’m speechless. That day is the day those people in Texas found out they were free. The juxtaposition of the massacre of black people and Juneteenth, the delayed notice you are free, is outrageous. Juneteenth symbolized our freedom.”

I don't know what Trump plans to accomplish in Tulsa on Juneteenth but I can almost predict that it won't be good for this country.

I think you give too much credit to Trump and his campaign. I think the date Ana’s the history are coincidental....

Here’s Why Critics Say Trump’s Juneteenth Rally In Tulsa Is ‘Overt Racism’

Here’s Why Critics Say Trump’s Juneteenth Rally In Tulsa Is ‘Overt Racism’

President Donald Trump announced his first post-Covid-19 campaign would be held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 19, drawing ire for scheduling the event on Juneteenth and in the city where 99 years ago to the month the U.S. saw one of the worst cases of racial violence in American history.

The rally is scheduled for Juneteenth, a holiday celebrated throughout the U.S. as the end of slavery in America and is slated to take place in Tulsa, the site of a 1921 massacre by a white mob that is believed to have left around 300 black Americans dead.

Social media users noted it was a strange strategy for Trump to focus on campaigning in Oklahoma so close to the election, considering he easily won the state in 2016, and a Republican has won Oklahoma in every presidential election since 1968.

I have no idea what Trump's intentions are, but they won't have good results.

Why Donald Trump's 'Juneteenth' speech will be a disaster - CNNPolitics

Why Donald Trump's 'Juneteenth' speech will be a disaster

(CNN)Donald Trump will return to the 2020 campaign trail on June 19 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a move freighted with racial symbolism and one almost certain to end poorly for the incumbent president.

The selection of Tulsa as the place where Trump returns to the stump and the date on which he is choosing to do it both suggest that Trump's long-whispered-about race speech -- in the wake of ongoing protests and unrest following the death of George Floyd -- will happen next Friday, and at a campaign rally no less.

Tulsa was the site of one of the most vicious acts of racial violence in American history when, in 1921, a mob of white people attacked a section of the city known as Greenwood or "Black Wall Street" and murdered hundreds of African Americans. And June 19, which has become commonly known and celebrated as Juneteenth, or Emancipation Day, commemorates the anniversary of the reading of the General Orders, No. 3, which officially informed slaves that they were free.

Its hard not to see this as intentional by the Trump campaign. While Oklahoma has no set limit on group gatherings, it's not a swing state, so there's no other obvious reason -- other than to address racial issues -- that Trump would stage his first rally in the state (and Tulsa particularly). And Trump could have done the rally on lots of days -- 364 of them actually! -- that don't commemorate the emancipation of slaves.

The significance of this date & place for his first reelection rally shouldn't come as a mystery, coming so soon after the Minneapolis racial turmoil that spilled out into the entire country. What he intends to accomplish will remain a thinly veiled mystery until then.
