    The Eye of a Needle...

Clearly. As I suspect you feel about your position. But fret not, I did learn interesting things from your and other peoples' posts. I seriously did not see how one could justify being rich and christian at the same time, but now I do. Do I agree with christian or conservative positions? Of...

Oooh, another verse proving my larger point. Cool.

Seriously? You've never heard a conservative use the bible to justify their policies? Here's a short list off the top of my head: Michele Bachmann George W. Bush Sarah Palin John Boehner Sharon Angle Christine O'Donnell Bobby Jindal Oh, and I like this little tid-bit: Bible Thumping Drowns...

Thank you for proving my larger point, Goshin. You can find anything you want in the "good book" if you look hard enough. I still wonder why the architect of the universe decided to reveal his wishes for his creations in the form of vague verses that could reasonably bbe interpreted in a number...

    The Eye of a Needle...

The two, for practical purposes, are inextricably linked. And in any case, the verse, even in context, still seems to be to suggest that the accumulation of wealth is a sin. It doesn't mention the difficulty of a powerful man entering the kingdom of heaven.

The only difference between honest disagreements over interpretation and suiting one's purposes is which side you support. If I think the bible is a defense of capitalism then an "honest interpretation" will support that. Ditto if I believe in liberation theology. All decisions about...

Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid don't help poor people? I'm saying who passed those pieces of legislation. Liberals. Of course those are taxpayers dollars. We tried leaving charity entirely up to the private sector. It didn't work out so well. I think Charles Dickens wrote a few books...

    The Eye of a Needle...

Umm, yes. That fund is called Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid... In any case, it's rarely liberals and Democrats who are invoking the bible to justify their policies.

    The Eye of a Needle...

Really? You don't see any way that two reasonable people could have a different view of the same, vague scripture? Which is why there's only one Christian church today, right? Take Revelation for example. You could, and plenty of people have, interpreted the entire book in hundreds of different...

Hmm. So the bible can be interpreted more or less in any way to suit the purposes of the reader. Interesting. And we venerate it why, again? (apparently I'm cool with this thread going off topic as well).

I don't think the verses I left out were relevant. They speak about the necessity of belief in god for salvation, while the verse I quoted was about the dangers of accumulating wealth. Two separate issues. Cool quote, made me giggle. I will be stealing it.

    The Eye of a Needle...

Fair enough. I just think it's interesting with all the bashing of liberation theology that you from the right these days that so many verse about the wickedness of money, caring for the poor, etc., are so often ignored, when the same conservatives have no compunctions about finding every verse...

    The Eye of a Needle...

Again, the verse says nothing about what you will or won't have in heaven, it's speaking about how to get there.

    The Eye of a Needle...

So if it really doesn't matter what kind of life you live, as long as you have faith in god, which I assume is what you take from this verse, then why the whole speel about a rich man's difficulty in getting into heaven? In any case, the same chapter also contains: "Jesus answered, “If you want...

The direct quote is above. That's from the New English Version, but all of the major translations are pretty similar. See the link below for most of them. Matthew 19:24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
