The Immorality of Saving a Dog, or "Why My Pet is Worth More Alive Than You Are!"

That's certainly a subjective choice though. What did you base that choice on? Is it because the child will live longer? Does the child, being younger, have more potential? We consider adopted children to be part of our family, yet technically they aren't (biologically) since our wives...

The Immorality of Saving a Dog, or "Why My Pet is Worth More Alive Than You Are!"

You didn't answer the question. What, for you, puts them in to a different category (less important)?

In your mind, what makes the chimp less important (or morally not equivalent)? Afaik they're self aware (I could be wrong.).

The Immorality of Saving a Dog, or "Why My Pet is Worth More Alive Than You Are!"

What if it was chimp that's smarter than a disabled person? What if there was an alien that could give us warp drive and a standard (intelligence) human?

The Immorality of Saving a Dog, or "Why My Pet is Worth More Alive Than You Are!"

I never said I'd be OK if they saved their boat over my child. You're treating the dog like any other possession. I said a member of my family, not simply someone/something I "know and love."

The Immorality of Saving a Dog, or "Why My Pet is Worth More Alive Than You Are!"

Assuming both are equally in danger of drowning? My family members come first. I have the right to choose under what circumstances I'd risk my life. I know and love my dog, so I choose him.

The Immorality of Saving a Dog, or "Why My Pet is Worth More Alive Than You Are!"

No, I'm not denying ethics/morality at all. What makes you think that? Can you explain further? EDIT: As an example of what I was saying: I don't believe it's morally wrong for the parent to save their child over mine. That doesn't mean I wouldn't have preferred my child be the one that...

The Immorality of Saving a Dog, or "Why My Pet is Worth More Alive Than You Are!"

Your rationale is false. You're assuming that I have can't value one loved one more than another and not still value all of my loved ones above a stranger. I value my child above my wife (I think she would feel likewise.). That doesn't mean I wouldn't save my wife instead of a stranger's...

The Immorality of Saving a Dog, or "Why My Pet is Worth More Alive Than You Are!"

There's a difference between what one would prefer and what is morally justifiable. You've brought up the example of choosing your child over someone else's child. Of course the other person would have preferred you save their child. It doesn't make it morally wrong for you to save your child.

I just don't care, in the sense that I don't think putting myself in the position of the stranger (being my family or me being the stranger) makes a difference morally. You're free to think you're morally superior. You apparently need to feel that way.

The Immorality of Saving a Dog, or "Why My Pet is Worth More Alive Than You Are!"

Oh look, you don't believe me. Whoop dee doo. No, I see the relationship you're talking about. I just don't care. My decision is based on valuing my family members more than a stranger (be it an unknown person or dog), so of course if my family member was the stranger I'd want them saved.

The Immorality of Saving a Dog, or "Why My Pet is Worth More Alive Than You Are!"

Yeah, and others reserve what they consider family members (which you apparently don't, with regards to dogs) above strangers.

The Immorality of Saving a Dog, or "Why My Pet is Worth More Alive Than You Are!"

I'd be upset about my child, but no I can't say that I'd kill him. Certainly I'd prefer my child be saved, but that DOESN'T mean I think that the guy was morally wrong for saving his dog. No, again, BS. All that would mean is that I value my life more than my dogs. It doesn't mean I don't...

The Immorality of Saving a Dog, or "Why My Pet is Worth More Alive Than You Are!"

All of this is SUBJECTIVE. If I say that I'd prefer that you save me over your kid, that doesn't mean I think I'm objectively (I don't think objective morals exist) more important than your kid. It would mean I value my life more than your kid's.
