An attempt to honor Juneteenth has backfired spectacularly for one Georgia Ikea.

An Atlanta branch of the Scandinavian furniture chain has sparked outrage with what employees are calling an intensely problematic menu curated to celebrate the holiday, which marks the emancipation of the very last enslaved Americans.

“To honor the perseverance of Black Americans and acknowledge the progress yet to be made, we observe Juneteenth on Saturday, June 19, 2021,” begins an email acquired by TMZ, which was sent to employees at the branch last week. “Look out for a special menu on Saturday which will include: fried chicken, watermelon, mac n cheese, potato salad, collard greens, candied yams.”

I don't know where to go with this so I posted it here. Kind of shows Southern insensitivity if not outright racism.

Theres just no pleasing some people.

-smh-

Sweden was very isolated and very homogeneous socially until recently. Socialism works great when everyone has the same traditions, same values, same culture, same history, same goals. A mono-population, especially a tiny one (not even 10 million) and especially an isolated one can be expected to have such difficulties.

I like Sweden, enjoyed living there, but I'll say this: it's more racist than the US on average. It's southern US racist. Maybe a little worse.

That's not Sweden's only political juxtaposition as the model progressive or socialist country. Sweden lacks intergenerational justice. Old people are gathered into understaffed hospitals.

The OP story sounds fake. I'm just sayin'.

They can blame it on the Swedes.

Shoulda stuck with Köttbullars and Sill. Prolly woulda miffed off all kinds.

I think I would have gone with decorating the break room with the Black History package, some hand made posters, a drawing or raffle and BBQ, potato salad, chips, pickles and such. Variety or sodas and some juices.... ✌️

Imagine to honor American WW2 vets someone was serving sauerkraut.

I would be extremely offended by sauerkraut.

Unless there was some bratwursts and frankfurts in there as well!
Sauerkraut by itself would be an insult to a hungry GI.

So, you don't see how it's a weird ass thing to do? Honoring Americans using what they fought against?

Employees called that racially insensitive and ignorant and said members of management need to do more to educate themselves on black culture moving forward.

"You cannot say serving watermelon on Juneteenth is a soul food menu when you don't even know the history -- they used to feed slaves watermelon during the slavery time," one employee said.

Yeah, maybe not the best idea.

I have observed that many people from Sweden were very racist, and heard it is a general phenomena, rather than just the individuals that I saw.

Send that fried chicken, collards, and watermelon to me. I'll gladly eat it. Love it.

Sounds delicious. These are standard offerings in any soul food restaurant. Why is it insensitive again?

What is the big deal about serving macaroni and cheese? That stuff comes from free states free states. Fried chicken, OK, maybe that is from a slave state. But it was not made in America until long after the Civil War.

The menu fits a stereotype for black people. They could have had the local Burger King cater the affair with burgers & chicken + fries. Nothing to criticize.

Special Juneteenth Menu: Fried chicken, watermelon...

What could possibly go wrong?

Do you try to be insensitive to reality or is it just unintentional ignorance? Because--let me be the first to tell you--the innocent act has been tried here before. It usually does not fare well.

Then they would have complained that it was "racist" that it wasn't soul food.

🤷‍♂️

The European White Male just cant win. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesnt.

Yeah, I got schooled on this a day or two ago, and it appears blacks would prefer people not get into traditional foods when recognizing the Juneteenth holiday. Okay. It's their holiday, they can make the call. I just can see why some well meaning people might have gotten it wrong.

Maybe the Euro male should have had an African American on the planning committee.

Doh!

Holy shit! Southern food!

Totally unintentional ignorance. But I'm learning.
